I am trying to remove the eccentric shaft lock bolt. Is it a standard bolt that unscrews counter-clockwise? Anyone have any helpful hints to get it off? I have tried an impact wrench and a littel heat but it won't move.

those things are on there! we put a breaker bar on it, and hit the breaker bar with a jack handle. if that doesnt work we put it in a press

the front bolt in the center of the pulley? An impact allways takes that sucker right off. is the engine in or out of the car?

twinturborx7pete 06-26-2003 07:57 PM

make sure the flywheel is held down so that the engine doesn't spin while you are trying to take it off. Other than that, we used a breaker bar with a jack handle as well.. took some force but finally got it.

turbovr6 06-26-2003 08:03 PM

you guys need stronger impact guns, or bigger air compressors!

twinturborx7pete 06-26-2003 08:04 PM

**** we used "Big Bertha" on it and it couldn't bust it...

this was at my old job at Discout Tire Co. where we have all the professional **** and Big Bertha is for doing RV wheels and ****. lol

Kus7 06-26-2003 08:36 PM

The engine is out of the car. What do you use to hold the flywheel when using a breaker bar?

I am at home in a garage so I only have 125 psi. This might be a good excuse to get a 3/4 or 1 inch impact wrench but man that sucker is on tight.

a flywheel Brake. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Tore apart a 13b-REW this weekend, Flywheel brake installed, Craftsman 1/2 24" breaker bar, 19mm socket and 6 ft of cheater pipe. 3 guys standing on the engine, one pulling the bar, bent the breaker bar @ 10° angle before it finally broke free. Yeah they are a little tight....

heh, whos the guy in the picture?

andynogo 06-28-2003 09:54 AM

Yeah, I use a flywheel brake, and four foot spanner. I then hit the sh#t out of it with a real solid bit of five foot wood (Jarrah down here in Oz)! Levering is no good- you need a good hard shock to loosen it!

Works first time every time...

Oh, and nice work boots in the picture.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.png

Same goes for the front bolt.

mmaragos 06-30-2003 06:36 AM

I broke my breaker bar (Craftsman 24" 1/2" drive) trying to get the e-shaft bolt off. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png Got my replacement from Sears and I am still working it. Liquid wrench has done nothing. I picked up a torch and I am going to try some heat next. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683517.gif

If that doesn't work, I am taking it to a truck stop shop where they repair semi transmissions, they have some big ass impact drivers there. I would think they will spin a bolt for me. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif Friggin' bolt.

me last year.

andynogo 06-30-2003 10:16 AM

Worst case scenario:

1 Cold Chisel

1 Big hammer

Proceed to hammer the edges of the nut each in turn with the cold chisel to undo it until it comes loose.

This does work (I've had to do it a few times before I made my four foot socket spanner) but it does destroy the nut.

I still reckon the way to go is with the big-ass socket and 3/4 or 1 inch drive breaker bar (or home-made spanner). Hit it good and hard and the nut should budge. I made my spanner out of the socket and a four foot piece of 1/4 inch thick steel strip to make the arm, which you can belt with a good solid length of hardwood.

If you don't want ot look like a caveman then you can try a long piece of heavy duty pipe (just like in FD3BOOST's picture!) and bounce it to break the grip of the nut.

Good luck!

mmaragos 07-03-2003 04:27 PM

Son of bitch. ****.

My e-shaft bolt is still stuck. Penetrating oil = crap. Fire = crap. 1/2" impact = crap. Breaker bar with cheater bar big enough to break 1/2" breaker bar = crap.

I am taking the block to a semi repair shop. Get the 1250 lb*ft impact on there and see if it will buzz off.

If that doesn't work...then what? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

We use a HUGE impact on it. The thing is almost 3 feet long and has a 1" drive. We have the biggest compresor Home Depot makes. It takes like 2 regular compressors to operate it otherwise. I have pics of it somewhere on here. Was under a different thread, maybe about taking off flywheel. We have one person operate the impact while another one holds the flywheel with gloves. Works pretty well.

Drago86 07-03-2003 08:11 PM

bah, ive done it twice, once in the car, and once outa the car, all you need is a 1/4th in. thick steel bar (got mine from orchard supply hardware), drill holes in it corrisponding to the holes for pressure plate mounting holes (or counterweight hole sif you have an auto or aftermarket flywheel) and bolt it on as a brace. Then get yourself a quality 1/2 in drive breaker bar (non ratcheting!) and put a thick walled pipe on it. if its out of the car, jump on the pipe, if its in the car, brace against the curb/your friend/a wall and kick the bar. i just let the pipe slide down untill it hits the ground, so i have as long of a lever as possible (car was up on ramps so it end up being a few feet) and kick the crap outa it till it comes off. Its much easier outa the car though.

Drago86 07-03-2003 08:13 PM

hmm, just noticed i was in the 3rd gen forum,.. but it shouldnt be any differnt, i think all gens are speced at 350 ft/lbs

Wargasm 07-03-2003 08:15 PM

I like to slip the leg of a knock-down engine hoist over a big breaker bar. This gives me about 6-7 feet of leverage and it comes right off! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

4 ft fence post on a breaker bar worked for me the 2 times I had to loosen it.

andynogo 07-04-2003 09:54 AM

Wow!

Great to see there are lots of other like-minded "I'll use what I can find lying around my back yard" home mechanics out there! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

Seriously mmargos, it should come off as everyone has said... Sure you're UNdoing it?... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

jspecracer7 07-04-2003 07:53 PM

First e-shaft bolt I ever witnessed come off was my first engine. Had big bertha on her...bertha STRIPPED THE BOLT DOWN...that's how tight it was on there. Mazda must have put locktite and an impact to put that bitch on.

Either way, 10 foot breaker and 3/4 or bigger socket...with about 4 people holding the engine down and 2 to add weight to the bar...that's how my last 2 came off. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

mmaragos 07-10-2003 08:05 PM

OK. It is off. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

I took it to a shop that does work on big trucks (transmission, tires, etc.). The guy that helped me out put a 1200 lb*ft impact on it first. Nada.

He had an oxy-acetelene torch on it for a few minutes https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683517.gif

Then hit again with the big impact...that did it. It spun right off.

I had tried the heat, but I just couldn't generate enough with a propane torch. I definitely need more tools. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png
