I'm about to start lookin for a 3rd gen RX-7 over here in the UK, most likely an Jap import, and was wondering what particular things I should keep an eye out for to avoid getting stung - especially with the rotary engine being a bit of an unkown to me.

Cheers in advance for any help!

make sure that the recalls have been done

make sure that the compression is good

make sure that there are no tranny issues like the 5th gear synchro...

make sure that the suspension does not knock in the rear.

ask for service records

ask for receipts for any repaired or replaced engine records

the list goes on......

the japanese cars didnt have any recalls.

you should look at anything you would look at any other car for. look underneath, is it oily? the fenders have little peice of tape of the alignmet holes that should be a) there and B) body color, if not you have either a 98+car or its been wrecked. the body is the hardest part to find in good nick, it seems to be hard to fix right too.

mechanically everything breaks except the driveshaft. the common things are, broken 5th gear synchro, the secondary turbo not working, oil leaks, water leaks

Turbos tend to need work after as little as 75,000 miles (125,000km) and definitely after 100,000 miles (160,000 km). Any car that has ever overheated should be avoided.
