You know, you think you've done everything right. You do the reliability mods, you upgrade in a reasonable order. You have the PFC dyno tuned and you change the oil every 2K miles. Then on a hard pull one night(not even a very hard pull) you blow a seal. I had the car compression tested and the front rotor is shot. They say it's either a side seal or an apex seal. So now I have to start over. What is the best way to go? Reman or Rebuild? I bought the car with a Reman and it only lasted a year and a half, but $1990.00 for a short block from Malloy is a pretty good deal. Which is more reliable? If rebuild is the way to go then does anyone have a hook up. I'm a broke *** sailor who really needs someone who will do a great job at an even better price. Know anyone??????



Also, can I still drive the car without causing further damage?

Break it apart and see what all you need, just replace everthing if it is questionable. You will learn alot if you rebuild it yourself, but that is up to you.

If it was an error in tuning, or somthing make sure you fix that problem before u blow the new motor

yep, u risk chunking a seal through your turbos at that point...



besides, it would normally be pretty hard to start if its got a blown apex seal.

I don't think so......

The mechanic said that a blown seal in the front rotor usually means a boost spike, but if it happened it I never saw it and it was too quick to be read by my PFC. You never know though, maybe I should have upgraded my pump? who knows.

If i were you I would do the rebuild myself. I have never done one but I would like to learn about it. And itf I do the job then its cheaper and I know it will be a quality job! If your a broke sailor then you must be one a base somewhere and almost all bases have and auto hobby shop that you can bring it to and work on it there. You should check it out!!

first of all, was there a warranty on the engine?



if you plan on doing the rebuild yourself, you should know a few things...

you have to make sure that all the parts are in spec (rotors, housings, yadda yadda yadda). you don't want to re-use a bad rotor or warped housing, that would almost ensure another blown engine.

rebuilding it yourself would help you to better understand how the internal parts of the engine correspond with each other and exactly what happens when you don't have enough fuel/too much boost. plus you'll have the great feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment, knowing that you did it yourself.





look into some rotary shops in your area. it wouldn't hurt to call a few and get some of your questions answered before making your decision.



IMO, it shouldn't be too hard to rebuild your engine yourself if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. you could PM Dave (FD3Boost) for more info on a rebuild. he has a good write-up on his site for this. (http://www.fd3boost.com/my_project.htm)







i'm currently in the same boat you are, just can't decide if i want to get a reman and have it ported and rebuilt or just send mine out. i would love to keep mine and rebuild it myself, have a 'back-up engine' so to say, but money is the main influence for me. hopefully i can come up with enough to get the reman rebuilt and ported and keep mine.
