The motor blew today. I had the car out last on Sunday. Was running about 18 psi on sunoco 100 octane and it was running great. Today it was decent out so I took the car out and washed it. I decided to drive it to the gym. I got on the highway, and just cruised. I gave it a little gas, and thought I felt a slight hesistation. I thought my plugs might have fowled out again. I had the radio playing softly but didn't hear any abnormal noises. Then I went to pass another car and just lost power. I pulled off the highway, and the car didn't even want to idle. I had to keep giving it gas too keep it from dying. I was barley able to limp it about a mile home, making alot of smoke in the process. I pulled out the plugs on each rotor one at a time and cranked it with the egi relay out. Rear rotor made 3 strong wooshes. The front rotor just sounds like it is flooded. Doesn't seam to have any compression. There was also alot of oil in the intake tract. When I opened the throttles plates with my hand alot of oil came out. I fear that the turbo was damaged as well. What I don't understand is what went wrong. The car was warmed up, at abound 80-82 degrees C (doesn't get much warmer in this weather unless I drive really hard) I was on the low boost setting. The peak hold on the power fc read about .65, which is like 9 psi I believe. Intake air temps were in the mid teens Celcius. I still had 1/2 a tank of sunoco 100 octane. The only weird thing I noticed was a very faint buzzing sound comming from somewhere under the intake manifold when I had the car off but the key in after it blew. I'm confused, because I didn't do anything wrong. If it blew under high boost than that would be one thing, but what the heck? Maybe a fuel injector got stuck? Peak hold duty cycle on the pfc was 50%. Any ideas? I'm going to try and have the motor warrantied by KDR. Its less than 8 months old.

Damn that sucks. Did you check compression? See how fubarred it really is?
Sorry to hear it bro. |
Didn't do a compression test with a guage, but the front rotor seams to have none at all. With the spark plugs pulled it just sounds like its flooded. The rear rotor makes uniform strong wooshes. Its definately blown.

YIKES, that sucks. No way to start a weekend, if you lived close I'd have you over for a feel better beer tomorrow LOL
Oh **** I just realized my house is gonna have people in it from Fri to Sun, I should probably clean and make it look like i care. |

Ihor remember when I installed the diff. at my shop? I told you your idle seemed not normal. In my opinion the engine had a sound like a hurt apex seal. I think your engine was previously hurt from prior high boost when your wastegate was giving you problems. I made that comment to Vosko, about how your idle was not normal.

that sucks alot. he told me last night
|
Damn...Sorry Bro
|
That sux man...
|
sorry dude, good luck
By chance is that a KDR motor with Hurley Seals? |
Hurley seals https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png
Hurley seals have been known to break for no reason wat too often. |
Damn Ihor, that sucks.
|
Sorry to hear,
Hope the repair goes smoothly! |
Sorry bro. Good luck!
|
sorry to hear
|
thats no fun
mike |
are you going to rebuild it, or buy a reman, or???
|
his engine has mazda 3mm seals in it
|
what was your knock reading on the powerFC?
|
damn ihor that sucks the big one, hopefully there is no "serious" damage to anything
|
my condolences.....

hmm i mean like when you are beating on it, it seems that the 3mm mazda seals dont like over 7500rpms
mike |
Ito, it seams like all three seals on the front rotor are damaged. When I crank it with the front leading plug removed it just sounds like it is flooded, no compression. The rear rotor makes uniform and strong wooshes. If it was a previously damaged seal, then wouldn't just that one seal break instead of all three?
|
its possible peices from the damaged seal broke the others, are they still in there? usually the 3mm seals like to "leave the building"
mike |
Dunno whats inside the motor, won't know untill its torn down. I'll probably pull the turbo off today and see if it got damaged
|
that sucks.....sorry to hear that
so you are going to rebuild it yourself? I guess i'll see ya over there then....i'll be in dallas in mid-february to pull mine out and fix a seal that blew as well. mine is the rear though and it sounds somewhat uniform with a spark plug out turning it over like you did, but i can see a peak in the boost gauge instead of 3 even pulses - i think mine is just cracked - it would still idle, but only getting 10in vacuum. I caught it pretty quick b/c it blew near my house and i didnt have to use the gas much to get it home. |
ihor i have an engine for sale only $2000 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
|
I'll rebuild it myself if KDR doesn't warranty it, hopefully they will.
|
just say no to 3mm seals..... :smirk:
|
ihor told me last night and its such a sad thing to hear when someone blows their motor, especially since i know how much time and money ihor put into his car.
|
If it makes you feel better I blew my turbo on monday. I was at 6k rpms and @ 15lbs of boost when it went. Then I noticed my oil cooler line had a leak. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif

HEHE, sucks. I'm pulling the turbo off right now. Dave emailed me and said to pull the motor and he will tear it down right away. Thinks it was a stationary or rotor gear. Hopefully I didn't break it inside too badly.
