damn it they closed the thread over there....

how come you dont have a pic of yourself in your sig over there?????

They closed it because aparently I didn't explain well enough about how I was stuck in a neighborhood, and the only thing I could do to make the car driveable for the time-being, without having coolant spewing everywhere, was to cap off the nipple at the radiator filler neck, and plug the hole where the nipple used to be, on the AST.

I had no choice. I was in some random neighborhood, and my brother wouldn't come help. I was only a few miles away, so I drove to the nearest gas station for coolant, then 2 miles down I was at the pool hall where my brother was, and where I ended up meeting up the RX7club member who had a replacement AST.

They're all like "you shouldn't have driven it" and I'm all like "Wow, as if I had much of a choice."

Tow it? To where? To do what? Thanks to God, and no one else, I was fortunate enough to have that RX7club member drop by a spare AST.

I think my motor is probably pissed at me, sure, but I took her out for a test drive about an hour ago, and temps were fine, no hotter than 185F (the weather's a tad warmer than last night), and she was boosting well.

I think I really did dodge the bullet here.

Prayer DOES work. haha :P

EDIT: I dunno why I don't have the same sig pic. As is, I need to take new pics, now that I have an R1 lip on, looks better now thx to it.

- I'm not sure where Columbus is, but Woodstock is pretty far northeast. Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Acworth, Kennesaw, Canton. All those areas are within a 10-20 minute drive from Woodstock. I'm only about 30 minutes north of Atlanta, if you take I-75.

Oh ok, im about an hour and 15 min south on I-75. We need to have a rotary get together in ATL sometime on '06!

IIRC, with the stock thermosensor the fans don't hit high until somewhere around 221 F. It's also my understanding that coolant seals are pretty good until around 240 F. I'd say that IF your gauge is accurate, you're probably alright. The reason I question the accuracy of your gauge is because you claim your car normally runs around 160 deg. F. The stock T-stat doesn't even open until 180, so that sounds WAY low.

When it's REALLY cold at night, like, right at 32F outside...if I'm just cruising in 5th gear at around 50MPH, the temp does actually stay at 160F.

Today when I took her out for a spin for comfort's sake, and in most instances, she's right between 170-190F. Stop-and-go traffic has a say in the matter, as well.

Low temp is a good temp, no? :P

You saying the coolant seals are pretty good until 240F is very re-assuring. I don't suppose you could link me to somewhere that always says that, could you?

I have some research to do.

And my god, I need to do something about the fans. They never turn on. When I turn the car off after driving, heatsoak causes the car to heat up to 210F. Something about an FC thermoswitch mod I remember reading about. Someone mind linking me to some threads with some good fan mods that would help eliminate this problem?

check here for a good writeup..

how far did ya drive her at those temps..

vosko 12-13-2005 07:54 PM

230 is hot but not that hot. if the motor was good it won't kill it. once you goto 250+ bad things happen ha ha

That's re-assuring Vosko. She's driving very well now, and at least I've got that Pettit AST in the mail. Motor should only have ~40k on it, so I think it'll still last me 60k+

Next step is Fluidyne radiator, then Power FC, upgraded IC...fuel-pump...1300cc secondaries..single-turbo, etc..

rotary_pwr 12-13-2005 10:00 PM

lucky you got out of there! sounds like things wouldve gotten a LOT uglier https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png

glad to hear its back to normal though https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

rfreeman27 12-13-2005 11:20 PM

I didnt read the thread, but dude you are fine.

dont let the douschebaggery of the rx7 club upset you.

ive driven my car a gallon low on coolant for 1/2 an hour, and nothing bad happened https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

granted it was running hot as balls, but still

Lionheart240 12-13-2005 11:28 PM

Yeah, and I feel responsible, not having just found a temporary solution, but going out and just purchasing a more reliable, aftermarket AST. And a Pettit one at that, so I know I'm in good hands. :P

Thanks guys for being understanding. RX7club is just full of....flamers. >_>
