Basically, a nipple on the good ole stock AST broke last night, and all I could do, seeing as how I was pulled over in a neighborhood, was cap off the coolant line that comes off the the motor, by the thermostat, and plug where it goes into the AST itself, right where the nipple itself had broken off.

I HAD to get out of that neighborhood, so I continued to my destination, where my brother was, who at least had some tools I could use. Before I reached the location, I had bought some coolant at a gas station nearby and filled it up.

Just another mile or two down the road I got to my destination to meet my brother. The temperature rose progressively as I was driving, babying the gas of course. As I was parking, according to my aftermarket coolant temp gauge, the temps reached 230F once more. Fans were on full-blast, and after I turned off the car, the temperature did slowly drop at least.

So I got lucky and called up a member of RX7club who stopped by the location I was at, and had a spare stock AST that he is letting me use. Installed it, and had to drive my friend home. Temps were lookin' great at 160F, and the car has been behaving just fine.

Now, honestly, I've shut off the car before, come back out soon after, and seen the temp be at, or very close to 230F, I'm assuming due to heatsoak.

Only mods I have are intake, down-pipe, catback, and poor-man's non-sequential.

But I'm worried.

Is 230F enough to consider my motor toast now, or soon? Everyone on RX7club has flamed me. I'm really starting to hate that site.

I was hoping you guys could at least offer some good advice on this situation.

*sigh*

All I heard from RX7club is "You're fuct, rebuilt now. you're an idiot, buy a civic, die die die"

Helpful guys. :/

Mazcare agrees that if the motor was toast, I would have seen symptoms immediately.

But honestly, it drove flawlessly at 160F, even under multiple WOT's, the whole rest of the way to my friend's house, and no hotter than 190F.

"I think you may have dodged the bullet" says Mazcare.

I burped the system a few times at my friend's house, and I'm 90% sure it's air-free and full of fresh coolant n' water.

I just have to keep an eye on my temps, and for any strange activity. That's all I can do.

I'm going to buy an AST today.

RX7.com one good enough? Mazcare says Pettit only.

I think you are ok. IMO an aftermarket AST is an aftermarket AST. I doubt if there are a whole lot of differences in them. I run the Pettit one, only because I got a good deal.

All aftermarket ASTs without a restrictor like the stock ones have are basically useless anyway, so no it really doesn't matter.

$20 difference between RX7.com and Pettit.

Might as well.

Mazcare told me that Pettit is based in Florida, also, so shipping should be good, since I'm in Georgia.

- Just burped the system again, lettin' her warm-up. No unusual smoke or smell, besides the usual rich yummy white smoke at start-up. My FD seems to run particularly rich, more-so than most. 180 miles per tank says so. :P

I think I'll be OK. But only time will tell.
