The way the 3rd gen pressure plate is designed is that when you step in the clutch pedal, instead of pushing against the pressure plate diagphram to release the clutch disk, it pulls away from the pressure plate.

Because of this, Mazda build a release tunnel under the transmission where you can release the pressure plate bolts off the flywheel then you can proceed to pull the transmission out. You can't just unbolt the transmission and expect to pull it right out because your transmission is locked to the pressure plate with a C=clip.

The manual states some ways to release the c-clip, but I always find it easier to just unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel all together.

It took me a clutch job or two to really figure out what Mazda was talking about in releasing that c-clip. Now it is really easy for me, takes about 30 sec.

Remove both inspection plates, one is on the bottom of the tranny and the other is right near the slave cylinder. WIth one hand pull the release fork towards the back of the car, opposite of the way it normally travels. Use a long flat tip screwdriver in the lower inspection hole and put it into the gap between the release fork and pressure plate. It should pop free very easily. If your prying very hard try to adjust where you are prying from.

The trans uses standard gear oil, 75W-90 or 80W-90.
