how much does it cost to fix the 5th gear synchro in the fds transmission? redline did not work. thinking of the kit that they sell to fix it.

GoRacer 09-12-2003 12:45 AM

Carry trans in - $200 (+ $150 for 5th gear)

Shop does all the work - about $500 (+ 5th if needed)

twinturbodork 09-12-2003 01:08 AM

holy ****, thats alot, could i do it myself. how much is the kit you can buy.

do i really need to do it, can still use 5th, just cant shift fast into it, which i really dont need to because he said it is capible of 143 in 4th, so dont need to race any faster than that.

damn, fd's kick ass

FikseRxSeven 09-12-2003 01:17 AM

you can shift slow into gear.....kinda just let it sit on neutral while you hold the clutch down and then after a 2 second ease it into gear........ i've been doin it for more than a year.. and the symptons havent gotten any worse.

keeping it in 4th will eat your gas on the highway

twinturbodork 09-12-2003 01:41 AM

yeah, it i probably not worrying about

FikseRxSeven 09-12-2003 01:43 AM

even if the gear grinds a little(and you will grind)....... at least you know that its long overdue for a rebuild or repair

j9fd3s 09-12-2003 02:20 AM

the part is cheap but it requires special tools and a little disassembly of the tranmission

i just rebuilt mine with a friend. it was really pretty easy actually. we found a great thread on the other forum and we made our own sst's. you need two different bearing pullers and a little pin punch. i made my own pin punch froma screw and a grinding wheel. and we bought bearing pullers buy we had to lengthen the arms to make it fit. we used some aluminum flatbar to make those. probably 30-40 bucks in the bearing pullers..."we bought expensive ones" and about $50 for the synchro and upgraded select spindle from malloy mazda. took about 2-3 days to do it. because we only worked on it a for a couple hours a day. and we were doing a bunch of other stuff to the car at the same time....clutch,tanny/diff braces. anyways here is the link with the write up we used.

The ring is about $ 22 from the dealer , Garfinkle puts them in for about $75 if you take him the transmission .

when my brother drove my car...... he noticed that if you push the shifter all the way to the right, and slide it into 5th while slightly pulling the shifter towards you, then you dont grind the gears at all.

when he told me earlier, i was like.. shut the **** up, but i tried it like 20 times, and maybe 17 out of 20 times, i didnt hear a grind, just slid into 5th smoothly.....

just something that might help you get a few extra miles on your tranny

twinturbodork 09-15-2003 10:15 AM

could by useing 5th gear out damage the rest of the tranny.

so should i use it or just avoid it all of the time

it very rare that it will affect another gear, if the synchro toally comes apart it can get jammed into other things but thats pretty rare.

The trick I use is to push from 4th to Nuetral, pull the shifter towards me (between 1st and 2nd), then push it back towards the passenger seat (4th and 5th), and then push it into gear. Never grinds now. I just can't slam gears into 5th....but like someone else said, at 143mph, no need to slam her into 5th, I can baby her into 5th for top speed still.
