Is a 4 rotor engine reliable? Because i getting a 94 fd3s soon and it going to be my weekend car.

there are no 4 rotor production engines. there are 3 rotors but they did not come factory in the fd.

 

i know there aren't 4rotor production engines. i'm just asking if they're reliable?



for example putting two 13b's togther to make a 4 rotor.



has anyone done it?



how hard would it be to build it?

 

I don't know much about this, but I imagine you'd need to fab the headers, intake plenum, and somehow cast an eccentric shaft. You might be able to get ahold of an intermediate housing for the space between the two 13b engines (since two of the outer housings won't be of any use). Then you'd need an ECU to control the firing of 8 spark plugs in 4 rotor housings, the injectors, the oiling duties at high revs, and all that other fun junk. Somehow I'm betting 2 stock FD ECUs would be a recipe for trouble, but someone on here may know something innovative enough to make me eat my words. Then you're likely going to reinforce your driveline, axles and diff to harness the power you're going to make. Then you need to cool it, probably get a bigger gas tank, more oil capacity, the list just keeps on going...

 

im going back to puerto rico soon and i know some shops that make moded 13b shafts to fit the 4 rotors and for the ecu i was thinking about going with microtec. the driveshaft, differential and axles are going to get swapped out wither way but the bigger gas tank would be useful and i guess ill have to use 2 big *** oil coolers...



but how reliable would it be?

 

If you're going to Puerto Rico, then you'll have all the resources (both for materials and knowledge) that you'll need. You'll just need to put the effort into finding things out for yourself from those who have done this before.

 

PR and Australia seem to be the places that come to mind when people mention 4 rotor engines. There should be some people on the island who can help you find out what you need.. in Australia there is a pink BMW drag racing that has a 4 rotor in it, i think.. Motec seems to be their ECU of choice for that one.. its been while since i see pics of it.

you would be hard pressed to do it for under 50,000 dollars. and it is not as simple as shovin two 13b's together and woo-hoo got a four rotor now. custom e-shaft, intake manifolds, exhaust, ignition coils, subframe, ecu just to name a few. a 4 rotor crank kit from kiwi-re is 9,500 dollars.

 

you can get enough rwhp on a two rotor reliably...

move up to the three if the two rotor aint cuttin it and you can equally match hp versus your ability to control the extra power..
