I have also just undergone a similar situation. Except I fried the old starter so badly that the rubber cover over the positve terminal on the starter just flaked off. The positive terminal on the starter burnt through the bakelite. The new starter (used, $5 from e-bay) had a hard time making a connection at the spade terminal. If the starter gives you any more problems. Use pliers to climp the female connector alittle bit tighter. In my case the plastic cover on the female spade connector also melted off. This made the crimping easy.
