ok.. I really need help on this wiring 5th and 6th ports open...what get wired and can somebody post or e.mail a pic of how its done please...i am totally lost on this often discussed subject..and since i want to de-smog pump my car i'lll need this

1Revvin7 12-11-2002 10:30 PM

The little actuator arms at the bottom of the 5th and 6th port actuators get tied open. U should see a little rod that moves up and down near those 2 dashpot looking things. Just tie the rods, rig them some how to be held open, the farthest they go up.

Apex13B 12-11-2002 10:37 PM

cool..now i just gotta locate them...i really need to invest in a factory manual

if you have done it.. take a picture and post it...its worth a billion words

thx

look at the last 3 pics in the list of thumbnails (click for larger versions)

in those the actuators have been removed (two 10mm nuts each) and a twist tie is used to wire them open, and the nuts replaced just so I don't lose them.

however, this is S4 LIM, so it will be slightly different for S5, but shouldnt be very large difference. You get the idea.

pengaru 12-12-2002 01:44 AM

btw the twist tie might not be on right in that pic, i think i put it back on for the sake of the photo and didnt pay attention whre i was putting it.

Maybe its just the S4's but for mine to be open, I push the actuator rods down. They are all the way up when the sleeves are closed. Are you talking about when you have the acuators out but the rods still there like Pengaru's pics?? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

pengaru 12-12-2002 07:06 AM

on the S4 the actuator pulls the rod in when it see's positive pressure, you should be able to figure out what position the arm needs to be in then to be open, knowing what direction the rod moves to open the valve. I think the S5 actuator functions the same way.

actually, I purchased an S5 intake for my car.. it's sitting in my parents basement. The guy I bought it from had already wired the aux ports and the wires are still on the LIM, I will take some pics next time I visit if you still havent dove into it by then.

do your 6ports work ?? if so i suggest leaving them alone....

vos didnt you notice this thread is duplicated in two forums? consolidate this bitch and delete my posts bitching about it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

mazdaspeed7 12-12-2002 11:56 PM

Please dont wire your 6 ports. Youre not gaining any hp, only losing it. If theyre not workign right now, clean them all up, and make them work. If they do work, leave them alone. I hate seeing people who think this is a great power mod. Its as much of a power mod as a type R sticker is....

j9fd3s 12-13-2002 12:36 AM

yah i agree with adam, i had mine wired open, and it lost all the low end and gained nothing up top

I though it was better to wire them open?Oh well.I'm pulling the port sleeves out this time. Can't you just take the lower airpots off and wire the arms open?

ChainSawOnSteroids 12-13-2002 01:58 PM

i just removed my sleeves, so i guess they dont need to be wired open anymore, hehe

Apex13B 12-13-2002 06:52 PM

thanks guys!...i needed that help! i owe pengaru a beer https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/beer2.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/37.gif

i will be using this for trouble shooting, mazdaspeed7...so dont worry about it! i am losing my cat...but keeping the air pump....as a recovering mustang owner, i know the value or driveabilty and torque :bigok: https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

mazdaspeed7 12-13-2002 11:08 PM

Lol, Apex... Just a warning, you will lose SO much low end by removing the sleeves entirely. I wrote up a long explanation on rx7club, but the search feature is disabled, and its probably 20 pages back by now... But to make it quick, the runner ends in a dead end a few MM past the port. It makes for horrible flow into the port. I drove my car like that for too long before I wised up. Now I dont see how I even drove that car. The low end was pathetic.

pengaru 12-14-2002 05:12 AM

still can't hurt to try, some people just want to tinker, nothin wrong with it i guess.

i'm leavin mine out for now in my build but thats just to get dyno #'s on the configuration, i plan on changing it after that.

ChainSawOnSteroids 12-14-2002 08:48 AM

im not worried about low end, i dont drive it too often so drivability isnt important to me, plus when i do drive it i always redline so power loss at the bottom isnt something i will need much of https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Apex13B 12-14-2002 12:16 PM

i drive this car 30-50 miles everyday in stop and go traffic....i dont feel like spinning the motor up to 4000 rpm just to get her moving https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png i just dont know if they are working or not...since every mechanic around me tells me to sell the car.... :squint:

pengaru 12-14-2002 12:43 PM

probably the easiest way to see if they work is smear some grease on the shafts of the actuators (cover the shaft lengthwise, make sure to at least get it close to the base)

go out for a spirited drive... pop hood and check the shafts, you will be able to see if the shafts have been pulled in by the actuators, the grease will be pushed up the shaft so there will be a clean/wiped area where the shaft has gone into the actuator.

credit goes to my buddy toast for this method, he told me it when i first bought my gxl.

Apex13B 12-14-2002 03:02 PM

thanks..i'll do that today if the rain subsides

Elaborating on what I said earlier, you will lose power EVERYWHERE if you remove the sleeves. No matter what rpm youre at, the turbulence from the port will affect airflow negatively. But the most noticable loss is the low end. The top end wont be much to notice, but like they say, every little bit helps.

And another thing. Without low end torque, you wont be able to launch worth a ****. My 60 ft times went from 2.2 to 2.4 just from wiring the VDI from low to high. My traps were higher with it on wired high, but the ET's were still lower. And that was with non-operational 6 ports. But I did have a nylon piece pushed into the 6 port runners that was angled to smoothly guide the air into the ports. If you really want to remove your 6 port sleeves, let me make you a set of those inserts. You will lose some low end over working 6 ports, but youll have more low end than any other way of non-operational 6 ports.

But I still think workign 6 ports are the best way. When I built this ported motor, I made sure to keep the 6 ports operational. And you know what? My heavily ported motor has more low end than my stock port motor with non-operational 6 ports.

Ive been where you are, and I hope you can learn from my mistakes what works and what doesnt. And dont tell me drivability isnt important. It is ALWAYS important.

Apex13B 12-14-2002 08:01 PM

it is extremely important....especially with autocross/roadcourse racing in mind.......someday
