I failed inspection for an exhuast leak. When i looked under the car i found this thing. Smoke was coming out pretty steadily straight through the mesh and a little bit around the sides. I didn't see smoke anywhere else so i am pretty sure that this is where exhaust leak is. According to the Haynes manual it is where the No. 2 pre-converter should be. That might be what it is but i don't think that exhaust should be coming out of it. 2 exhaust pipes come down from the engine, merge into one, go through this thing, into the main cat, then straight back to the exhaust. This car is a 1990 and i just recently bought it so i don't know if any work has ever been done on the exhaust. Is it ok to just put exhaust tape over this thing so i can pass inspection or will that screw up the car ?

The red arrow shows the location of the piece.

thats not a catco converter, at least it doesnt look like mine

Considering there is only one converter on the car I would say that

thing is a resonator put there to hush up the exaust.

Have it removed and put a piece of pipe there, you should pass.

Might be a bit noisy though.

Who the hell fails for a exaust leak anyhow? Thats pretty shitty of them.

yeah, in NJ you will fail for anything. I should have taken it to a private place for inspection. Thanks for your help, i think i'll just take it out and replace it with pipe like you said.
