What to look for in an RX-7 GTU?
So there's this 1987 RX-7 GTU red for sale, AC works and apparently the brakes and battery were replaced 3 months ago.
Seller's words "Great driving car with nice stereo, no problems mechanically, may need seatcovers and headliner but hey for $850 you can't beat it."
What do you think?

I haven't seen it, and I don't have much experience with rotaries (aside from the fact that they should be run to redline once a day
) but I'd like to own one just for the sake of owning a rotary. Is it going to be an expensive mistake to try it for a daily driver? I could afford up to $4k but cheaper is better and I'm not going to run off and spend all $4k on a TII or something.

If you can afford the upkeep on it, then get it. Do you have another car at your disposal in case the GTU takes a dump on you. The only thing complicated with rotaries is obviously the engine. Everything else is the same all across the board. Brakes, electronics, drivetrain, etc. Be warned though, that car is now "technically" 20 years old, so there is going to be something wrong with it. You will have to replace something.
Welcome to the rotary world, you have found an addiction.

the pictures you showed us are of a s5 89-91 GTU , in s5 that is the basicly model, has single piston brakes but is 5 lug.
the s4 gtu has lsd, and big brakes,
either way the car if it runs good, doesnt smoke like crazy, and drives fine, is worth the price

remember that people sell at prices so cheap for a reason....sounds like a good buy, but if your new to rotaries you wouldn't know if there is a loss of power or other signs of potential problems to come that could leave you without a car for a bit if you don't have a backup.
