I have an 86' RX7 with about 170 kms on it. It has started letting out a LOT of smoke when cold starting. Seems to be more the longer it has been since the car was last running. It may not smoke at all if it has been less than say 24 hours. Also, when driving, when it gets to about 3500 rpm it will start smoking LOTS again. I mean it probably blinds anybody behind me. When I click the automatic tranny into overdrive (thereby immediately reducing rpms) the smoking stops immediately. Other than that, the car seems to run quite fine. Although, it does do this really weird surging idle thing when its in a bad mood or something...and will occasionally stall during these times. It doesn't always do this...and I can't figure out under what conditions it does. Can anybody give me some insight into these issues?

Sounds like oil. Is the smoke white/blue color? Do you go through a lot of oil? I had this problem with my vert. I pulled the oil inectors (under upper intake manifold) and cleaned them up real good with carb cleaner. It really helped the problem, but now it is starting to smoke again, so I'm going to check the amount of oil that the oil metering pump is putting out, that might be causing my problem. Do you have a Haynes manual? If you plan on working on the car yourself, I'd recomend getting one.

The smoke is white/blue. I use regular 10/30 oil and go through a bit of it...but not a whole lot. It just seems strange to me that it will only smoke when cold...or at rpms above about 3500. It NEVER smokes at all otherwise. Thanks for the replies.

does it show where the oil injectors are? Are there o rings around these is it in the manual.? I have to pull my upperintake off anyway to check my pulsation damper so I will try this anyway if it works great if not time for a possible rebuild or just drive it till it dies and upgrade to a tII.[FONT=Arial]

Just follow your oil metering lines. And no, there are no o rings on them.

mine does the same thing except it smokes around 4500 and likes to die when cold. gonna check the thermal wax pellet thing when i get some free time. as for the smoke i can only hope that it is the metering pump or injectors but its probably a bad seal
