Tonight I was driving my 87 rx-7 13b non-turbo to the bar. Amazingly not speeding. (Why does everything happen when I am NOT speeding?) And the car's rpm drops to about 200. Fuel gauge drops instantly 1/4 of a tank off the gauge and I can't seem to get the revs back up to where they should be. The car had been running fine with a new battery put in yesterday. The car was not just stopped and it went on. It was at operating temperature and was just off a stop sign. I IMMEDATLY park the car and turned off the engine. I tried to turn it over again to see what it would give me when it would restart and it would click. My buddies who have just a bit more experience with cars say that its loss of compression. Anyone have a cause list for me? ANY help will be appreciated.

Your alternator died. Your friends drive Hondas.

I'll concure w/ the alternator/connection problem. My jetta did the exact same thing when the alt belt broke. It ran fine till the battery started getting week (10-15 miles) then the gas gauge went from full to empty in about a mile.

Yup, it could just be corroded connections, bad cables. Take the alternator off and have it tested. Better yet, replace all the cables (positive, negative, starter) and go from there, probably needs it anyway.

Is this why there are so many Honda swaps running around? Oh damn - guess I blew another engine, lol.

It's your alt or belt or battery cables like the rest have said - same thing happened to me on my '88 NA after swapping pullies and the belt was loose.
