Check the compression. Check if there is any smoke on startup, blue = buring oil, deep white is buring coolant ( but if the engin is cold and its cold outside there will be a little white smoke, its just moisture.) deep white after warmup is coolant being burned, it also has a distinct smell. Check the gear syncros by driving it, make sure there is no grinding. Check if they have maintence records, look under the hood. Clean or dirty? Make sure u drive it and drive it hard, make sure there is no hesitation etc. Hope this helps.

 

compression test is important. check for oil and coolant leaks. make sure the turbo works and doesn't smoke!!! good luck

 

If the car has ABS, check below the pump on the passenger side for evidence that the pump is leaking. It will be expensive to fix.
