My transmission needs to get rebuilt over the winter, and I don't really want to trust it with a general transmission shop. Should I take it to any race shop, or should I take it to a rotary specialist? (rotary transmission? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR) Pineapple has good rebuild prices, but the shipping would kill me. I could take it back to the east coast without a problem...is there somewhere in PA, NY, or NJ where I should take it? I don't want to pay an arm and a leg, because the only problem is grinding into second.

banzaitoyota 11-13-2002 12:04 PM

Shipping is only 65-75 each way, my tranny shipping was 75 from pineapple to SC.

FCmaniac 11-13-2002 12:11 PM

If you have to go to a race shop, you can try KDR. I'm sure they're probably backed up with winter projects though. Honestly, I had my 86 trans rebuilt at Cottman and the thing was perfect. I know its a chain but they then guarantee it and they can back a guarantee a lot better than a small race shop.

UniqueTII 11-13-2002 12:27 PM

Banzai, who did you have ship the tranny?

FCmaniac, I had considered KDR, but like you said, he's probably already scheduling 3 or 4 months in advance. I had a transmission rebuilt by Aamco before, and it held up well, but it cost me a fortune.

banzaitoyota 11-13-2002 12:43 PM

Contact ROB at Pineapple racing, He has a major discount thru SAIA ( a trucking Company). He just adds the charges to your bill. Its also safer than UPS, they are used to heavy items. You just wrap it in shrink wrap and strap it to a pallet

UniqueTII 11-13-2002 01:04 PM

Hey mister, don't knock UPS! lol. I'll give them a call when I am ready to have it done...they definitely have the best prices around.

pengaru 11-13-2002 01:25 PM

I'm considering having pineapple build me a miata guts na 5 speed, lemme know how it goes if you use them..

banzai, do you have that miata 5 speed form pineapple in the car yet?

Rob x-7 11-13-2002 06:29 PM

I have a excellent local shop, been doing my work for 13 years.

1Revvin7 11-13-2002 09:09 PM

how much did a rebuild run u guys?

UniqueTII 11-13-2002 09:27 PM

I'd consider taking it to LI...give me some details. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

banzaitoyota 11-13-2002 09:59 PM

Not yet mine was 950 with Miata gears, I am very hesitant to use UPS for packages more than 50 lbs, to much broken shi!

Turbo II 11-14-2002 11:47 PM

he works for UPS now

UniqueTII 11-15-2002 11:16 AM

I'll be careful. The less people send transmissions, the less heavy **** I have to load, so it doesn't bother me a whole lot.

Rob x-7 11-15-2002 11:26 AM

What year is your car again ?

Rob x-7 11-15-2002 11:37 AM

$450-$500 plus any gears it might need and thats with a 2 year 24,000 mile warranty.. incase anyone else was interested

vosko 11-15-2002 11:51 AM

That's a great deal.... does that include sychros? Seriously, mine will be due within the next 10K but the car is actually still under a warranty program. Do you deal with warranty claims??

:bigthumg:

Rob x-7 11-15-2002 12:26 PM

I know they do warranty for some places, not sure who.

Price doesnt include sychros or gears, he is VERY honest and wont rip you off when he takes the thing apart, he will invite you there to see whats wrong when they take it apart.

I myself have been dealing with the place with the same owner for about 13 years, sent him about 5 of my own cars and NEVER had a problem.

Even my Cutlass with the big block he warranty the tranny when I had a problem, and even then it was a solenoid, nothing major.

My Camaro I had him build me such a heavy duty transmission I should have taken it out of the car when I sold it, lol I told him to build a tranny good for at least 800 horsepower.

First time I went plowing with my Jeep I blew the tranny because I drove like a ******* and lost reverse, it was totally my fault for beating on the truck so much in the heavy wet snow, he fixed it no charge even though I was about 6 months out of warranty, turned out to be the belt for reverse or some **** like that, had it back the same day.

He did the tranny on my Lexus, which I was EXTREMELY pissed the **** off I had to get done in the first place because I had just gotten the car 2 months before that.

I have given him auto repair shops and limo companies who still use him to this day. They are not a fly-by night operation, they have 2 locations actually.

I usually look for cars with bad transmissions to buy, you can get them REALLY cheap like that!

UniqueTII 11-15-2002 12:31 PM

The MX-6 was a 5 speed...Jon knows...lol. It was rebuild by Aamco...they will never get another dime of mine.

vosko 11-15-2002 12:43 PM

special ed doesn't drive automatics !!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

UniqueTII 11-15-2002 02:02 PM

I can't stand them...I always shift them manually (except when driving RD's Explorer) and look like a ricer. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

pengaru 11-15-2002 08:02 PM

I really wanna see some numbers for NA cars using the miata guts. It should help 0-60 and 1/4 mile times significantly.

Turbo II 11-16-2002 12:56 AM

anything would help the NA's JK
