I can red line in every gear exept 5th. Why? I am doing 200 mph at 5000 RPM and that's as high as it'll go. I'm assuming there is a rev limiter or something in the chip is this true. Has anyone experienced this problem?

9BASE3 11-28-2002 06:08 PM

Uh... 200?

In what? A Modena?

rotarycrazy 11-28-2002 06:12 PM

Modena, whats that? I'm in Canada:) That's KMH not MPH. 200KMH = about 122 MPH

9BASE3 11-28-2002 06:17 PM

Ahhhh!!! Ok... Whew... I thought you were doing 200 in a RX7... haha... Ok... Hmmm... Sounds like you just need more power to push thru the air!

What kinda car? Mods?

Geoffman72 11-28-2002 06:51 PM

sounds like an NA with breathing problems

Turbo II 11-28-2002 06:58 PM

lol, i said bullshit too when i thought 200 mph

sidewinderx7 11-28-2002 08:39 PM

"I am doing 200 mph at 5000 RPM " ... you said mph, not kmh

pengaru 11-28-2002 10:03 PM

5th gear is overdrive, you will need alot of power to get to speeds where you redline 5th. Reducing drag (improving aerodynamics, reducing weight...) will make it easier also. Smaller diameter tires will have a similar effect of a shorter rear end gear ratio, which will make all the gears seem shorter so you will have more torque multiplication but less top speed, however you will be able to get to higher r's in 5th.

If you get the miata 5 speed internals put in your box the ratio is a bit better and the gears are closer ratio, it will improve acceleration significantly and 5th will be more useful for things other than saving gas.

He corrected himself....

Canadians... Can't live with 'em, can't figure out what to do with 'em since you didn't get rid of them!

Just playin!! (and none of that applies to you Koolaide... I know just fine what I'd do with you!! LOL )

Hadn't seen the posts, I'm not on everyday. Anyway, yeah its KMH 200 kilometers per hour in 5th gear. That's it. I'm thinking its a computer chip problem. It doesn't make sense to me and I don't like it. Anyway, since you guys answered in full force. I'll ask about chips. So far, all I did was remove the 3 cats on my 86 RX7 non turbo. I put a straight pipe in their place. A couple of Dynaflow in the rear. Couple of things:

- I want to know what to do next, computer chip

- the car smells like its running rich, you guys know anything about that?

There is very little backpressure, the car sounds good, and runs good. Gimme your comments

Seppuku 11-30-2002 08:50 PM

well since its an 86 with no back pressure your 5th and 6th ports arent opening which will decrease top end power. As for the running rich if its just the smell of the exhuast that makes you think that, then its a natural thing for the rotary. Hope my answers make sense.

moving this to 2nd gen forum https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

1988RedT2 11-30-2002 09:02 PM

I don't believe there are too many cars made that will redline in 5th. It's a simple matter of not enough power. The maximum speed for a lot of cars is at redline in 4th. Fifth is just there to save gas. I wouldn't worry about it.

pengaru 11-30-2002 09:11 PM

yup, you either need to produce ALOT more power to be able to accelerate in the overdrive gear or change the ratio to be shorter, but since 4th is 1:1 anything taller will be overdrive, would be nice to have a 5 speed with 5th 1:1 and the rest close ratio in an FC, 1:1 with a 9-10k revving 13B is still quite fast top speed.

rotarycrazy 12-01-2002 11:49 PM

****, that's awesome feedback. Guess I'll just have to get on the highway and see what the car will do in 4th gear at or above redline, depending how I feel that day. Awesome forum, I'll be back for more info, thanks. - RotaryCrazy

pengaru 12-01-2002 11:56 PM

don't cruise for extended periods > 8k with stock internals, you will likely damage something, like twist a stationary gear for instance.

Apex13B 12-02-2002 08:17 PM

listen to pengaru....i learned that the hard way trying to do 135 against a 89 vette

Apex13B 12-02-2002 08:18 PM

btw racingbeat's FC did 238mph

pengaru 12-03-2002 11:44 AM

racing beats fc didnt have the stock gearbox i'm pretty sure.

thats correct, its has a custom tranny and rear end. the front end of the car is pretty stock though

i was in the car with my brother in his series 2 and we hit 240kph at 8500rpm

Turbo II 12-03-2002 05:28 PM

didnt that car flip over?

cosmo 12-03-2002 06:55 PM

racing beat car flipped at 215mph when it was painted white. i got the video

rotarycrazy 12-04-2002 09:18 PM

Let's see it. You guys are pretty ******' crazee. I love it. I was on the kill forum part from this site, awesome. I'm not loaded, but I'm doing what I can to uphold the 7's name. I love my car. Like I said I'm only starting, gotta get this exhaust licked and move on. I don't know what's going on since I put the straight pipe on. I know its a bitch with the cold weather up here and everything, but after it warms up it runs pretty good. Gotta get a GTech and test out some times. You guys are lucky, cause I gotta wait until next summer. We already got a batch of snow, **** you guys don't even know what that is do you. It's frozen water, LOL! Anyway, I could use some ideas as to where to go next with the mods, after the exhaust is done. BTY, I'm not going with any name brand ****, me and my cousin are riggin' something up. If there is something seriously wrong with this please say something, I don't wanna blow my engine or anything like the guys at the RX7 shop in town here said would happen. Although it would give me an excuse to port the intakes and exhaust I guess. Heh, with every ying theres a yang, you just gotta spin every potential bad thing into a good thing, like 300+ horsepower! Anyway, I need feedback https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

rotarycrazy 12-04-2002 09:37 PM

Lets see the video! This is the 2nd Gen section right? Didn't know it was here. When I'm done the exhaust, what next. Chip?
