Yup. Probably the cat if you are getting a sulfur smell. They tend to smell like sulfur or rotten eggs. More then likely isn't the battery.

If it's the battery then you should probably see acid leaking from it.

Yea you might check and make sure the air pump is working and the tube isn't leaking, torn, disconnected etc... the air pump is really important especially on the "tri-cat" design the rx-7 has to keep things burning instead of building up and overheating the cat... no air no fire, you know the drill.

Pretty much what I figured, it's not a constant thing and I've not done much to this car yet. Replaced the drivers seat last night so I'm actually sitting up while driving and did a TPS adjustment. Idles so much better now and it seems throttle response is not as THERE or NOT.

I'll get to looking at it next weekend as I'm heading to Broken Arrow, OK for my grandmothers 80th birthday this weekend. Not taking the 7 as it's somewhat untested and it's pretty high mileage

Also smelling 90 weight oil so I've got a leak somewhere. The shifter bearings are shot to heck so that's probably a part of it.

Annnd the clutch makes a lovely rattling and griding kinda noise when it's put in. Hey it was a $500 car what did ya expect?
