So I went out to start up my TII today for the first time in about a week. It wouldn't even turn over. I hooked it upp with jumpers thinking this might be the problem and it didn't fix a thing. I have bypassed the clutch interlock switch because it went out and I didn't feel like buying another one. so my question is what else could it be. I think the starter could have gone out, how would I check this> thanks for the help.

Hit the starter a few times with a piece of wood or something, then try to start it. If it works, then you're starter is going bad. There are ways to take them apart and clean them or replace the internal contacts, but it's usually not worth it compared to getting a new one.

 

Connections to the starter could be getting worn too. Worth it to check those (along with the battery connections) just to be safe. Notably, check the wire coming from the ignition to the starter. It's a lighter gauge and not overly hard to wear out in one way or another. Simply use a test light and make sure that when the key is in "start" it has power.



Is there anything happening when you turn it over (clicking)?

 

when I turn the key to start it I hear a fairly loud click and nothing happens. all of the dash lights are on and it beeps at me. I'll try hitting it a few times and see if that helps.

you mite have a battery that is so bad that it wont evin charge. have you tryed a new battery. it is cold where you live? also you can test your starter by removing it and trying to see if it will work by puttin the power to it . the way you do that is by taking a jumper cables and hucking them up to a battery you know is good. them you have to take the + and put it on the big nut on the starter. look at the small nuts you will see one with an S by it. tuoch the - to it and the starter should work if it doesent then you have a bad starter. when you you go to test the starter put your foot your something on the starter because the starter will move (hard) when you do that. WB

 

Best idea is to put the starter in a vice to test it, and only touch the terminals for an instant so you don't burn it up with no load.

 

is there any way someone could post a pic of where exactly the starter is located? I don't want to sound like a dumbass, just want to make sure I have the right piece I'm pulling out. I'm fairly new to working on cars, so all of the help is greatly appreciated.

I don't have a pic handy, but I can describe it. Go under the car from the driver side (use jackstands!) and put your head directly under the transmission, near the front, just behind where it meets the engine. On the driver's side of the transmission there will be a part that looks like it is different (because it is), this is the starter. It looks like a large cylinder about 4 inches in diameter, 10 inches long. There should be another smaller cylinder attached to it that is about 2 diameter, 4 length.



Not the best description, but it'll have to do until someone throws a pic up. Good luck.



BTW it sounds like it is the starter that is going since it is clicking. That means the solenoid in the starter is getting power but, for one reason or another, it isn't spinning the starter. Although I suppose this could be from a weak battery also. Huh.
