Pardon my stupidity, but.....

Let's say I'm looking at a bare block reman 13B motor. How do I know that it's an S4 turbo and not an older 4-port n/a?

Old 4 port N/As won't have the centre iron with injector bungs (oldschool 4 ports were never EFI), and also on the centre iron, there is no tapped sections for FC motor mounts, they have the 1st Gen front cover style mounts.

Also that centre iron has a really cool oldschool M logo cast into it that nothing from the FC series has

Correct me if I'm wrong--the n/a block also doesn't have the turbo oil return just below the OMP?

Yeah basically if it was an oldschool 4 port n/a, theres no injector bungs in the centre iron, and, well its usually just pretty damn obvious it's an oldschool 4 port motor, not a tii block.

Well, okay, thanks. It's just that this extra T2 motor I'm stripping down for a core is the first one I've seen without all the turbo doodads on it.

Well you might have a case of "I was sold an N/A motor but was told it's a TII"

You got any pics of this no-turbo-doo-dad-dealie?

Haha. No, that's the scenario I want to avoid. This motor is out of a T2 chassis. I'm the one pulled all the turbo doodads off it.

But if you really want pics, I can probably get some up tomorrow.
