What's the difference between the s4 and s5 turbos if any?

Thanks

There is a dif in the turbo, but I dont remember the exact terminology as to what...the s5 manifolds use a twin scroll design though, which the s4s don't. The s5 turbo & manifold is an upgrade from the s4, so if you have one laying around, you could swap it....

the 89 has a larger wastegate, and a better exhaust manifold design

If i were to run about 10 psi would i need to port the wastegate? How much pressure can the s5 turbo make with the ported wastegate efficiently?

Thanks again

Isn't that backwards, s4= twin scroll?

yes if you run 10psi you should port the wg, i think it can control like 8 psi w/o being ported.

Honestly, I can't remember...I THOUGHT s5s were twin scroll...could be wrong, either way...the s5 is better,lol.

S4 has the twin scroll.

dual wg ports also! s5 is better in everyway!

Jerk_Racer 02-20-2003 08:31 PM

Those dual w/g holes don't do jack for me. A full 3" exhaust with an intake but no TID yet and it boost creeps like a mofo. I have a BNR Stage2 waiting to be put on. The w/g are going to be a bit larger.

Gigady gigady gigady. All right!

I have no idea why I haven't ported mine yet, eh another project, ya!

turborotor 02-20-2003 10:15 PM

Is all in the turbine housing and exhaust manifold the difference as some have already stated. The cartridge and compressor housing area the same between s4 snd s5.

Can you even go past 8psi without porting the wastegate?I thought you had to port it to go past 8.

Jerk_Racer 02-21-2003 02:56 AM

If you don't port it, it'll go sky high. :smirk: When it's ported it's easy to control it.

my unported 87-88 turbo would hit 11-12 psi in the midrange with an intake and catback
