Will it run if you stay on the gas?

if it was mine, i'd look at the fuel system first, its like it gets fuel when you're cranking, but not when you let go of the key?

i'd maybe hook up a fuel pressure gauge, or some way to tell if its getting fuel pressure after you let go of the key.

from you description it could also be a vacuum leak of some kind too.

After checking fuel pressure I would make sure ECU is getting signal from air flow meter. As for a vacuum leak, I think that it would have to be a really big leak if the car won't idle at all. Usually a small leak will increase idle speed.

i agree with what was said earlier, check the MAF, vacuum lines and fuel pressure. if you haven't replaced the fuel pusation dampener it might be toast.
