So, when I removed my intake manifolds awhile back, I followed by the Haynes book. It said to relieve the fuel pressure; open gas cap, unplug pump, start car until it stalls. WTF? I actually did this, and it still runs fine. But isn't it very bad to run lean/run out of gas? And the book tells me to? me=teh confused

Running lean and running out of gas are different beasts When the engine is idling there is not much pressure in the chambers so by cutting the gas I doubt you will ever detonate. It is basically like unplugging the injectors but not quite as abrupt.
