How can I get the power window switch out on a '88 convertible drivers door? Do I need to remove the door panel? If so does the mirror have to come off first? Thanks

You can ever so gently try prying up on the switch to get it out.

Or just pop the panel off if you have a hard time. The mirror doesnt have to come off, but the little black cover on the inside does have to come off.

There are screws inside the arm rest and a few screws around the perimeter of the door panel ( one is kind of hidden in the carpet ) as well as one under the cover that covers the inside door handle. Then just pull the panel away from the door a bit starting at the bottom then lift it up and out, there will be wires for the light and the switches to undo before you can pull it free.

New switch from the dealer, I just got one last summer.

Swap the left and right? I dont think so, but you can if money is tight run any toggle switch for now. New switch I think was anywhere from $40-$60 I think? My friend with a body shop just gave it to me and didnt charge me so I dont remember. From the dealer came the next day.

im cursed to have 7's with bad window switches myself. on each and every one i had to jiggle, wiggle, and curse to get it to work. i was able to use an electronic parts cleaner (like blue shower) to get some working and on others i took the switch apart and re-soldered one or more cold solder joints (bad solder connection----mazda is notorious for it). hopefully this will help

Is anyone sure the left and right window switches on the drivers door are different? I was thinking of swapping right to left on drivers door, can always use the passenger door switch to lower that window.

I'm sure you could do that. It'd take some creative rewiring on your part though. The question you should ask yourself is "do I want to waste the time, when I can just pick one up at a salvage yard?"

thought it would be as simple as switching plugs on both, switches appear to be the same from the outside!

the switch is the whole square black plastic part. there are 2 basic problems with them

1. the contacts fail, it can be cleaned and it will usually works

2. the pivots for the part you put your finger break, this requires a new switch
