i have a 1987 tii. i was wondering if there was a way to " jurry rig" my rear differential rubber mounts to make them stop clunking..could i just weld a piece in place of the old rubber mounts to make it solid..thank you

 

if it's a clunk i wouldnt think it would be rubber mounts... i'd get your diff looked at, sounds like what mine was doin when i busted it.. also, when it comes to rear end's, trust me, dont "jurry rig" anything, it wont last long and will create problems down the road, i did that with my third diff and it busted in two weeks

 

A dull clunk could be the diff mounts, but the only good way to fix it is to replace it. I don't know of a cheap fix.

 

i also forgot to describe when it does it.. when the rear end shifts in movement..an example of it would be.. u keep taping the gas then it would be like clunk clunk clunk clunk..then if u hit the gas once then hold it..clunk--then its fine..so its only when it moves..can someone tell me where these rubber mount things are located or what u have to do to get to them to " inspect " them

 

you have a clutch diff. that is the clutches engaging!!! change your diff fluid and inspect the mounts

 

they shouldn't be engaging till one wheel begins to lose tractions though should they? not just when he taps the throttle.

 

front diff mount just near where the driveshaft connects to the rear diff carrier.

um yeah, front diff mount = dead

 

so it should need ppeplacing of the front diff mounts

 

there's only one front diff mount, its rubber and wears out. When it wears out it exposes metal. When your car "squats" on a launch or trans/clutch engagment your cars frame/body hits the diff casing, aka metal to metal contact and creates a nice clang/thud.



i liked some of the responses in this topic tho...such as "its a clutch diff, it does that"...that one was funny to a point...not haha funny, but sad funny.



Anyway, there's one, its hard to get to, some weld the thing together for a solid mount, some replace with stock, and basically its up to you. solid = vibration. Personally im going to stock or similar type setup. its a pain to replace tho...unless you have a nice car lift.
