ok basically i got everything disconnected and the hoist is attached but now im thinking that i should just take the engine out with the transmission becuase the bellhousing bolts are seriously impossibly to get out. anyone have any ideas? im only working with 2 engine stands here and im a tall guy with a badback so i keep the front up high so i can work. should i just take out the engine with the tranny still attached? blah im so tired/discouraged right now.

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png Its a pain but I was able to get the eng. off the tranny.. just small turns. don't do it by yourself unless you have done it before..2 is always better. espacally if your going to take it out w/ x-mission.. Many people like to remove the front end. but you can get it out if you careful. just ensure that all connections and mounts are removed from tranny too.
|
I got my engine out alone without too many problems. Getting it in was a bitch. Took me like 5 times as long.
|
yeah, out is easy.. in can be frustrating sometimes.
|
Wrench plus breaker bar plus steady torque should break those nuts loose.. Did you try that?
|
i gotta wait till tomorrow to get a breaker bar, but do you guys think i should pull the tranny to? im not sure if i wanna.
|
I would leave the tranny in myself..
It doesn't need to come out, so don't bother with it. If you ever have to change a clutch disc, then, those bolts should be easy to break free anyways. I'm sure you don't want to pull the motor/tranny to change a clutch right? |
ill give this another go today, i got discouraged after i just started smashing my fists into everything when the bolts were to tight and the wrench would slip. i think i should have a breaker bar to use as well.
|
if you have a lift pulling the tranny is easier, but on the ground i dont think it is
|
Seems strange that you are having trouble getting the bellhousing bolts off. You could soak them in P Blaster or liquid wrench. In the past when I couldn't turn a frozen bolt or nut, soaking the assembly with P Blaster for an hour made it possible to unscrew the parts.
Taking the engine out w/o the tranny is how I did mine, twice. Putting it back in took me longer andI had to develop some skill to do it, but I basically removed the radiator and stood in the engine bay as the engine hung from the hoist. I guided its mounts into their slots in the frame, and stuck the clutch right on the tranny input shaft. With a little foreplay, it all came together and slid right in. |
crap im probably gonna have to do this either tomorrow night or sunday during the day...i had stupid court today. i think the gas/coolant/oil reacted in the bucket cuase i felt like i was gonna die last night when i came inside after being in the garage for about 4 and a half hours.

It's really not that hard to remove/install the engine and trans as a married unit. The radiator should be out as well as the ps/ac bracket and components. Jack the front of the car up, support w/ stands. (you'll need the jack in a minute)
http://89rag.nopistons.com/gallery/a...4104.sized.jpg http://89rag.nopistons.com/gallery/a...4105.sized.jpg http://89rag.nopistons.com/gallery/a...4106.sized.jpg Support the rear of the trans w/ jack, then remove rear trans crossmember from trans and chassis. Remove (3) motor mount bolts that run through the pan and the single nut on the plugs side. The chain on the cherry picker needs to be adjusted like this... http://89rag.nopistons.com/gallery/a...4103.sized.jpg At this point the engine can be pulled out and the trans will follow ( with some adjustment to the jack) It can be a one man job and go smoothly with a little patients and, as far as I'm concerned, it beats the hell out of trying to fumble w/ all the damn housing bolts |
hell yeah. thats what i was lookin for. thanks alot, i guess the tranny's comin out to. much appreciated...just wondering where did you attach the hoist...
|
I really prefer taking them out seperately, doing them as one can be tough sometimes to avoid scratching things like the torque tunnel... I've never had a major problem with the bolts on the bell housing, I just use a rachet from underneath to get all the bolts except for the top 2 and the one nut on the center top bolt... without trouble.
then on the top two I just use a box end wrench with a second wrench interlocked into the open end for more leverage, it works every time. Last engine I pulled my wife undid the top bolts using this method... if she can do it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png just gotta remember to use mechanical advantage, if it's difficult, make the lever longer! |
give me a longer lever and i can move the world? i did that like twice this week, still have all my fingers too
|
its easier to put back in with the trans on it....

It is true, like vosko said, installing is easier than removing, but with an extra set of hands, it should be easy. |
i dont even think i have those brackets...cuase i looked in the FSM and it said to do the same thing and i had no clue what it was talking about. could they be removed? possibly the previous owner removed them?
|
the brackets are on the front and rear plates for NA cars only
on the turbo cars theyre on the UIM and rats nest elbow on the driver side of the engine if youve removed your rats nest you have removed one of the brackets what i did to remove it and drop back in was take a chain and attach it to one of the downpipe studs, and bolt it on there....then on the ps/ac studs where the plate went, bolt the chain there then adjust the chain at teh top where the hook is on the lift....then level it when you have to |
yeah dont work on it alone know what i mean. Hey if you can post pics of ure progress that would be so nice.
