Since I had an accident, I need a new hood. Mine was aluminum, so I'd like an aluminum replacement. I know a guy that could get me a steel one for cheap, but I think I found an Al hood in a junk yard that's in good shape. I have to go back and stick a magnet to it to be positive, but it feels pretty light. So is $100 way too much? How much do they usually go for?
He also has a fender that he says is $75. My parts guy doesn't have a fender for me. Is this reasonable, or would I be getting ripped off? |
If the parts are in nice shape, I'd say both prices are very reasonable.
|
New aluminum hood retails for 900.00USD, I just bought a new one a week ago and they said there were only three new ones left in the States, 100.00 for an Alum hood is a steal!
|
Good to know! I'll go by there after work with a magnet, just to double check. The hinges were real stiff, which made it hard to tell by weight.
has anyone tried polishing the Al hood? that would be toight! |

good deal man, I passed on one for $100 at a local yard and now I regret it.. so much lighter than that steel beast

I think that would be illegal, you'd be causing accidents everywhere you went...

So he would still charge $100 for a steel one. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/dry.png |
Get it a al hood is a bargan at 100 bucks
|
the fender is a alright buy if its orginal mazda, if its aftermarket
its only like $100 new |
you can tell if it a alum. hood by the rivets on the latch
|
New fenders from Mazda are 150+, and a reg. steel hood is about 350+. Give or take 50 bucks maybe.
That is a steal. |
I spent 150 on mine... keep in mind that aluminum doesnt paint like steel does...The primer let go of the metal and the topcoat and clear are flaking off on mine.
That IS if you have to paint match it though. 100 is a steal |

doesnt surprise me... the whole car feels like sandpaper
|
Haha. Hopefully I can still get my Alum hood and fenders for 100 bucks. I am getting a really sweet deal.
It can't be worse than painting carbon fiber though. |

Some one did a shitty job on the prep then, alum paints just as well as steel, galvanized on the other hand is fucked!
arent peeling? not just RX-7s mind you |
Yeah, no original paint on my car is peeling. Only the spots where you can tell someone did touch-up (one door, rear bumper).
It was pouring rain yesterday and I was on the bike, so I was just ready to get home. I don't think that car's going anywhere, it was buried behind several other cars, so I'll check it out when I get a chance. |
I have 3 AL hoods, and the paint is NOT peeling
|
I bought a dinged up, slightly bent in front vert al hood from a junkyard a couple winters ago for $50. They gave me that price because they were slow and needed my $. It is worth about 30 pounds of weight savings up front compared to the ~55lb. steel hood. Saving weight up front is critical, because a slight rear wheel weight bias is pretty much the ideal weight distribution for a hardcore race car.
$100 for a used, in good condition FC aluminum hood is a good price and I would buy it if I were you. |

Just a curiosity question and not meant to sabotage the thread, but what would be the weight difference between an aluminum hood and a carbon fiber hood?
Cost difference? |

The hood is steel, and the fender is dented where I didn't see before (was looking mostly at the hood before). Well, the search continues. i.didnt.do.it, if you feel like checking out that other place, that'd be awesome. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png |
just polish the underside of the hood, that'd pretty dope...but time consuming.
|
Baldy, come on up and you can get a hood from me
|
al hoods are the way to go. I have a pretty good shape one I am selling.
I just upgraded to a tii al hood in prep for my tii conversion on my vert. |

I found a guy selling a gold fender on e-bay, who's in Atlanta (~4 hours from me). I e-mailed him, and he says he has 4 aluminum hoods, $150 for one. Looks like I found the winner! Thanks so much to everyone else that was helping out, and your gracious offers, banzai and i.didnt.do.it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

i will let the one i have go for 125.00 - please get it out of my garage . . . . .
|
I got a tip from someone to go look in a certain junkyard, so I went there over my lunch break. 4 rx-7's there! I found a flat black aluminum hood, he said he'll let me have it for $80. Awesome! No fender though.
|

I'll end up like this: gold car, flat black hood, gray bumper, 1 red headlight, and maybe a gold fender to match the car. |

I'd like to visit that junk yard.
|
here's the damage:
Here the suspension isn't damaged; the tire looks awkward because the car is on jack stands. |
