I took a shot at painting my own wheels. I purchased a paint gun for my compressor at Harbor Freight for $20 and went to NAPA and purchased $14 worth of automotive black paint, reducer, and hardner.

It took me about 3 hours to properly clean the wheels. They had a good 14 years worth of crud on them. Laid a bunch of plastic down in the back yard, mixed up the paint and got to spraying. Was pretty straight forward. Thanks to RobX-7 guiding me through. Put 3 coats on, turned out pretty well for my first time paitning this way.

Now I just need to paint the rest of the car...

Looks good. I'm thinking of painting the wheels on the sport black too.

Do they have to be buffed smooth first to look decent? My 5-lug GXL rims seem to have a sort of texture on them.

For $34, that's awesome!

No, these wheels have a texture on them as well. They just have to be cleaned very thoroughly. I think the texture helps the paint to adhere.
