$2000 paint job will have flaws, every paint job has flaws when you look close enough, flaws and shitty work are 2 different things though. You get what you pay for, if you get estimates of $1500, and then a estimate for $4000- well you get the idea. Again, ask to see thier work, a paint job before, then have them call you after, ASK what your getting- full primer, wet-on-wet primer, wet sanded and buffed after? And as for amount of coats of paint- this isnt the days of laquer, high soilds low VOC paint usually means only 2 coats of clear, 3 if they are going to wet sand and buff it, anymore then that is too thick, it could yellow depending on the color, and chip very easily. Depending on your basecoat, some colors cover in 2, and some take 5-7. Dark solid colors take less coats, silvers and what not take more also because you cannot lay them on too heavy or the mettalics will look like ass. My car ( 88 vert ) has 3 coats, it was wet sanded and buffed after. I just got done painting my Lexus, its 2-tone from the factory, and the bottom color covered in 2 coats, the top took 5 coats to cover, then it got 3 coats of clear ONLY because I was going to wet sand and buff it after, which I did, if I wasnt, which is what most shops are giving you- meaning the paint job right out of the booth, you will get 2 coats of clear. Another selling point of a shops paint job is a booth, do they have a booth or a room with a fan in it? THERE IS A DIFFERENCE besides the dirt, booth allows better paint flow, less chances of solvent popping ( fish eyes ), cleanliness of course- which also depends on the prep not just a booth, and of course the baking of the paint when they are done painting it. Shop around now instead of AFTER you have a paint job you might not be happy with.
