hi...so over the last month...my car has overheated more times than i can count. no my question is....i've replaced the thermostat...and all of the hoses look good...no heres the trick...when i'm crusing...40mph or above...the car acts fine, but if i drive extended periods of time or sit at idle for a little bit, the temp starts to shoot up realy fast....and the weird thing is...it doesn't do this all the time...if anyone has any suggestions y...or what i could do to fix this..that'd be great...thanks

 

If its been overheating, I wouldn't drive it. Are you sure its overheating or are you just going by the guage? The guage or temp sensor could be bad. Is there any coolant loss like a leak under the water pump? How is the fan, fan clutch, and shroud? Do you have the splash shield on? These are the first obvious things to check out.

 

if all checks to be well .... like ur stock setup is in good condition just failing



i did all the same, upgraded to a koyo radiator, and a fiero electric fan.....my car idles for 20 minutes wihtout even budging on the temp gauges (i could do more, but didnt)....its perfect at all times



if uve got about 400-500 total to spend - do this mod! (koyo = 360 from rx7trix.....fan = 20-30 on ebay or junkyard....and adjustable thermostat i got for 50 ....)



theres a lotta hooplah about clutch vs efan...i found efan to be amazing..thats just my .02

 

efans rule.. some people insist the stock is better.. not sure how.

 

I would say the stock fan is better It flows so much CFM it is not even funny. But I would say if your fan clucth is toasted go ahead and put an E-fan get the 3.8 Taurs fan with the 2 speed. I would have the low speed running on the thermo sensor, and the high speed with a manual swicth.



The down side to an E-fan is if you have your head lights on, Ac(If Equipped) on, and your wipers, on(Which can happen at any time at night when its raining) when that Efan kicks in you are already over loading your alt which meany you are using power off the battery. now if you have system you are already pushing it.



Along with a E-Fan I would reccomend an upgraded alt. Mabey an FD alt or do a GM alternator upgrade. Imagine 160+ amps running through the car

 

stock fan does not pull more CFM than a decent electric fan at idle, when you need the fan most, sitting at lights and in traffic. The stock fan pulls more CFM when you are going up in rpm, you are usually moving when this happens which progressively reduces your need for any fan at all as you go faster. In these conditions the mechanical fan provides more airflow and your electric fan will usually just shut off here because the temps won't be up since it was going full out the whole time you were idling if hot.



electric fans are more gooder in my opinion.

 

i think it depends on the condtion of the stock fan, when my friend starts his ver his fan is louder than the exhaust, (pushing insane air) but then kicks back off until the car is warm.



I'd say that the stock fan is about strong enough to pull your car along it'self.



stock fan is more better in my opinion (plus you don't have to fab a shroud)

 

did you bleed your coolant system for about 15 minutes before you put the cap on??

 

well...i had a 89 camaro that liked to overheat all they time, so i always keep an eye on the temp gauge....it doesn't do it a lot, it goes up real fast, to the last line.....then i'll stop the car(don't wanna blow anything up).....and a lot of coolant comes out of the overflow....so it def oveheating..how would i know if the stock fan is bad, and the radiator was just replaced with a new one

 

Ive overheated a few times at the track as well. If your car is truly overheating it will definlyel be pissing coolant out the overflow.

I have converted to a set of fans from a 3.3 Chrysler dynasty. Twin 10"

It was A nasty tight fit but works extremely well. I also added a high temp pump on my heater core outlet and piped it into a Tee on my coolant return line. When I run the pump it draws coolant through the heater core and back to the rad. I can run this pump the heater on high and the e fans to cool the whole system without the engine running.
