Oil Pressure Problems

I've got this problem with my oil pressure gauge and Im hoping its electrical. I just replaced the sensor thinking that may have been it, but it hasnt solved much except that it read 100 instead of 75. Heres the deal. At idle it will read 100 for a bit and then the needle shakes around like mad and it works its way down to zero and then back up if i gas it just a little bit. It does then in gear also, sometimes at wot and sometimes when im just cruising around. Its fairly intermittent and the engine has been run hard enough that it would have been dead some time ago were it ever actually running at 0 psi. Wonder if anyone might have some insight on this. Also, I was wondering if any of you have ever tried out any mechancal gauges and could recommend one. I dont trust the electrical one and wont be satisfied that the engine is doing what its saying until I have one.

Aftermarket electronical ones are reliable, just don't buy autometer crap

You should try a mecanical oil psi test first before you trust a after market gauge. If the mecanical readings remains the same you have internal engine problems

yea, thats what i was thinking. if you saw the way the thing acts, it just doesnt seem possible that it could be doing what it says that it is. fluid dynamics and mechanical pumps just dont work that way, unless you get some cavitation, but theres plenty of oil in there, so that cant be it.

haha there ya go, I would do as mentioned, verify with a mechanical one first, but you don't want to be running a mechanical one in your car...

mechanical gauges are ******* eVil...hot oil and oil vapors inside cockpit = bad

if its wierd and intermittant id look for a short in that wire, maybe too

yea i checked the ground and redid that. i may just have to rewire the whole thing

Guage failure is posible also wiring could play a part. Ground problems will make the gauge act up in the same maner but you have to start with a good reference to rule out the failed componets. You should not run a mecanical guage in the cockpit it's only to verify what the engine is doing. When you find that out you can find the problem mecanical or electrical
