next time it does that try wiggling the key a bit and see if

it changes anything, dont shut the car off, just wiggle the key a little.

the engine is not stalling. the tach just stops working and the check engine light comes on. it starts to work as soon as the car is restarted and everything else works fine when its not on. does this have anything to do with the transmission guys? it seems like it would since its the tach

Turning the key back and forth just resets everything...for a while. Check the codes:

An example of somebody who didn't:

A guy I know called me to ask about his check engine light. I told him what it probably was, but he should check the codes anyway. He didn't listen and kept driving the car. Then he blew his motor. Your motor can be good internally, but if the controls are messed up it could blow.

I was just mentioning the key thinking maybe he had a little electrical

bug like that vert when we first started it and nothing wanted to work.

In that cars case though it was just from sitting, dont have to wiggle the

key no more.

Also, the tach functions from a signal off of the trailing coil. I had a non-functional tach for a long time and I mentioned it to a well-known rotary mechanic out here. Just off his head, he said to run a (ground) wire from the coil's bracket to some good grounding point nearby. It fixed the problem immediately. I'm not too sure how the Check Engine Light fits into this though. It may be a completely different problem...
