Recently I picked up a mint condition 1990 RX7 Turbo II. Since driving the vehicle I have noticed a small external noise when I’m in motion. At low speed a hum/whistle occurs when I am moving in gear and not touching the clutch pedal. If I apply the smallest pressure to the clutch this noise goes away. It sounds like it’s coming from the mid section of the vehicle, possible the tranny area. It should be noted that this noise does not affect the performance of the car/tranny. Really, it’s just annoying…

sounds like a throwout bearing

yayarx7 05-29-2002 02:04 PM

it defintely sounds like a tranny/clutch noise but is NOT the throw out bearing. The TO makes noise when the clutch is depressed.

Fill the tranny with Redline or Mobil 1 or another good synthetic and see if that helps.

I think it's just a slightly tired tranny. Slightly tired as in it could still last 60,000 miles or more.

First off, let me congradulate you on the purchase...those things are hard to come by...also, welcome to the forum, and ALSO...I agree w/ Vosko...sounds like a throwout bearing...my old one did the same thing...only mine did it while accelerating...

read above it says it goes away when he slightly depresses the clutch pedal <_<

*oops you got the idea though*

Vosko, he said when he slightly presses the clutch, it goes away. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

My advice to you is to sell the car right away, it isnt worth a crap now with that noise, so Ill give you $200 for it. :bigok:

Same thing happens with my car, I'm guessing it's the tranny making a racket or perahps the pilot bearing? (Dunno if they make noise)

My tranny is starting to go bye bye, worn synchros and all that jazz by the look of it. The clutch in the car is pretty new so https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Guess I'll swap trannys, buy a used one or else just rebuild this one...except rebulding tranny's hurts your hands.

That and I don't have the stuff to do it anymore....*sniffiles*

vosko 05-30-2002 10:18 AM

another way to test is if you have the car running move the clutch fork by hand and see if the noise goes away. maybe the clutch just needs to be adjusted?

Spike 06-03-2002 02:13 PM

Thanks everyone, no deal rob.

I'll look into the various suggestions...

we had pilot bearing go out,it was hard to downshift and get into gear at all when stopped.didn`t make any noise much.

Spike 06-07-2002 09:45 AM

If it is a bearing that is making the noise, how long before it goes and whats the damage (to the car and my bank account)?

$450 and a cheeseburger, and thats my final offer

Spike 06-07-2002 06:19 PM

Try $15,000 (Can) and your woman....:)

Bad joke, I know.......

Anyways, I think it may be the throw out bearing, although I don’t see this as an immediate problem. Bearings can make noise and not affect the shaft they are supporting, but it will need to be replaced one day. The noise hasn’t gotten any worse and I only notice it on occasion. Seeing as the bearing housing is used to depress the unit and there’s no problem with that function, I’m going to let it sit till after winter once it’s out of storage or until I need a need clutch. Unless some else sees this as a terrible plan???

Noticed it does it to a lesser extent at idle, when in neutral and I'm not touching the clutch??? Strange....

car looks good. if your gonna change the bearing might as well get a new clutch while your in there https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Spike 06-09-2002 07:08 PM

vosko and others...

Would it still be the bearing if it's doing it in neutral? Without the clutch being depressed?

Spike

vosko 06-09-2002 07:09 PM

i believe so

Spike 06-09-2002 07:42 PM

If it isn't repaired right away?????

Spike

vosko 06-09-2002 08:40 PM

you risk ruining the clutch

Rotarydragon 06-10-2002 01:44 PM

My car is in pretty much the same boat, but it makes other noises that make me think the tranny is leaving this world.

If I pull the tranny, I'm probably going to replace the whole darned mess.

Now I wish I still had my tranny jack. . . .ah well, floor jack works if you're carefull most days.

Spike 06-24-2002 10:13 AM

Put in a new pressure plate and throw out bearing.... Still makes noise????

vosko 06-24-2002 10:18 AM

maybe its a bearing in the tranny ?
