If you just burnt the corner off of a Apex seal from going a little lean it will do what your experiancing and still idol fairly decent and seem like it still has compression.. The only way to really tell in this case is to have it actually tested on a comprssion tester at mazda... $

How come when something goes wrong, everyone on this forum always jumps on the BLOWN ENGINE bandwagon. "My tire pressure is low"........."Must be a blown engine" You could very well have a stuck fuel injector dumping hordes of fuel. Which would equal to less power, and obviously a overly rich mixture. An engine which once had both primary injectors stuck open gave every characteristic of a blown motor. But it had good compression.

It could also be the coil.....check for spark.

This one is rare but make sure your intake isn't clogged up with OH lets say a rag. Don't ask me about that.
Due to the way it happend this is what it sounds like... Free up exaust flow and railing it threw 4th gear with no fuel mods will get very hot under high load = dead engine.... Of course it could be somthing else, but in this instance that's what it sounds like.

I think Matt is just looking for an excuse to go with a street ported engine.

If it is blown, it'll be a live and learn experience. If not, he said he's going with fuel system mods anyway.

few people seem to be positive here. If they state: "car won't start" yeah it could be a blown motor, but chances are it's not. Certain members here including myself have experienced a blown motor, but come across like they are bitter and would like others to be the same. It sucks i know, but lets try to be a little more positive. I'm not singling out anyone on this thread, this is a forum based general coment.

I personally love it when its something simple and always look to rule out the simple things!

I bought that GXL I sold over the summer not running, guy thought the engine was bad, some peeking around under the hood raised doubts as to the guys mechanical abilities, towed the car home and one simple thing let to another and the car ran beautifully, invested a mere $200 with getting the seats re-stitched, tune up, coolant/thermostat change, running an ad in the paper, and a good wash and vacuum and I made $800 profit on the car.
