ROTARYROCKET7 06-24-2005 10:03 PM

Well i just came back from T&R racing. They did my transmission swap for $600. I checked there transmission mounts they made its nice, everything is fine. They even installed my SS brake lines and bled my brake lines.

Now my problem isnt the work T&R Racing did its the ******* Transmission from the 89GTU.

First of all the transmission is a 88, even though the cars a 89.

When the car is idling theres a knocking noise. It sounds like when lets say a flywheel is spinning and a small circular rod is rubbing alongside the teeth. Thats the noise it makes.

IN first gear it makes the noise mad loud. The same rod rubbing along the teeth sound. And you can kind of feel it in the shift knob itself, like something is loose and dangling inside and it rubbing on something causing the noise.

Tony said its the transmission itself.

Once you shift into second its fine, the noise goes away and the car rides good all the way thru 5th gear.

I only stalled it once when i tried to take off in second gear, the RPMS have to be around 2.5k RPM to take off.

The other problem is that when its in second i think the car should be around 30mph , or i would guess. But at 2omph it sounds like its whinning like its time to shift, when i hit third i can go up to like 60mph and then it begins whinning to be shifted.

So now should i just get a new transmission case (gearbox) or have this one rebuild?

Rob got any transmission for sale...

Jason, NYC

EDIT: The transmission is making mad ******* HEAT, its cooking the fat right off my bones. Is this heat a sign of a bad transmission?

75 Repu 06-25-2005 12:28 AM

makes sure the tranny is lubed..

and maybe the throw out bearing is bad.. my bro's civic was makin that noice.. and thats exactly how it sounded.. but only usually first gear and maybe a bit of second sometimes.. then it would go away..

75 Repu 06-25-2005 12:31 AM

oh yeah.. i can take third all the wy to 100mph.. and 4th to 120.. so maybe the tranny is havin issues..

89 Rag 06-25-2005 12:33 AM

$600 sounds a little too cheap for all the work you are talking about, shoot us some pics of the work when you get a chance.

ROTARYROCKET7 06-25-2005 01:11 AM

better yet ill make a video of the sound that it makes and everything.

I dont think he would **** it up by not lubing everything properly, and the first thing he told me was its not the throw out bearing. Thats the transmission itself

that was labor only, he supplied the parts

I have no NA transmissions

ColinRX7 06-25-2005 09:19 AM

Make sure the fluid is topped up

That's all you can really do

That's bad though man, If the gear oil is topped up, get a new transmission man.. Sorry to say...

At least then you could do it yourself.. No fabrication involved, just bolting it off and back up...

Sorry about your luck though if the transmission is shot, go talk to the guy you got it from...

ColinRX7 06-25-2005 09:21 AM

FYI find an N/A transmission with the case and bellhousing ribbed.. It's very noticeable

The smooth bellhousing indicates S4 or older...

They are a dime a dozen, you shouldn't have a hard time finding one.

Also FYI, Rob offers a transmission rebuild service with warranty on it if you look in the parts for sale sticky at the top... Next one you get, don't spend much on it, just get it to Rob or Rob's guys, have them juice it up with a warranty and you are good to go

ROTARYROCKET7 06-25-2005 10:02 AM

yeah i was debating about just rebuilding it and getting a warranty. I would need a price on that and a guarentee it would be good. Theres a guy on this forum selling a "Excellent Condition" 88 RX7 tranny in FL for $175 + $90 shipping. IM thinking about just gettting it from him. Im waiting for some specs on it though to see whats good.

ALso when i reverse its a lil more fidgity that i would expect and it jerks.

I stalled the car on purpose a few times to see its limits and it stalls really rough. ANd when your about to stall it i can hit the clutch pedal and i can bring it back from its grave.

I can start the car without depressing the pedal. ( i tried )

This is my first full time stick car and i drove it from t and r all the way home and only stalled it once when i tried to take off from second gear. Which is pretty good since i only drove stick here and there when they were available all for less than 20 minutes lol

Yeah im not going to take it back to T&R to get it dropped i will do it myself.

EDIT: Colin

NOTE: I bought the entire car for $200. SO ima sell that **** for parts likke theres no tomorow to make back the $600 job, and the cost of the car. (Will try)

ROTARYROCKET7 06-25-2005 10:14 AM

i dont know what the inside of the tranny looks like, but have you guys ever heard this noise or know of whats inside the tranny that can be making the noise and can i fix it myself

Black8 06-25-2005 11:42 AM

I realize he supplied the parts, but still

installing a clutch pedal and hydro assembly, an in and out of a transmission, changing out to a flywheel and counterweight, fabbing brackets, installing S.S. brake lines and bleeding the system, that's a ton of work for only 600 bucks.

A good deal is always nice to come across, so long as the work doesn't suffer because of it.

ColinRX7 06-25-2005 01:32 PM

I think he should drop the assembly himself if the fluid level is fine

I'm with 89Rag

Then he can look and see if there was any shoddy installation procedures or take any pics for us to see

teknics 06-25-2005 02:01 PM

yea that would be what id do, drop it and check the work.

well actually, i wouldve just had them fab the mounts and i woulda installed everything myself...btu thats cause i have lifts and **** https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Black8 06-25-2005 02:46 PM

AAHhhh...it's slow in the RX8 forum...I was just having fun.....RR7, just take that mother down and see what the deal is. NA trannies aren't hard to find. You could get another one.

1revnrex 06-25-2005 03:21 PM

Get another tranny Jay, Dont let stupid **** like this discourage ya. If anything do like I told ya on AIM and rip it apart after ya drop it, it will give ya an idea of what went wrong and also give ya an opportunity to take pictures of everything. You're like a damn Japanese tourist anyway https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

so you would rather ship a used transmission for $265 then get yours rebuilt with a 2 year warranty for $500?

I dont make a dime off the transmissions, you will bring it to the transmission shop and deal with them direct, it will be done in a day or two as long as parts are around for it.

All the syncros and wear items will be replaced, I made the deal with the tranny shop for this reason specifically, I hate to see people dump thier time and money into used stuff and have it go to **** on them, deal with people not shipping things out on time, not arriving as promised, etc etc.

The guy is in Florida, it might be good, who knows, if its not whats your recourse?

If you have a problem with the tranny they will come tow the car and take care of it for you, he owns his own flatbed specifically for this reason.

1revnrex 06-25-2005 03:27 PM

500 for a rebuild is a great deal, Id jump on it. Or get a T2 tranny and have it rebuilt, throw that in your car.

teknics 06-25-2005 03:29 PM

yea im having robs guy rebuild my trans cause god knows itll probably blow https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

I had a 90 MX6 I built a few years ago. Broke the motor in, turned up the psi a bit, and **** 3rd gear onto ST RD60 here in FL. Moral of story, if you think its gonna work fine it wont. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

89 Rag 06-25-2005 03:48 PM

I paid somewhere in that neighborhood for a trans rebuild, smart money has it rebuilt if nothing else for piece of mind, should have done it before it went in the car but oh well, as long as it gets done.

i will definetly do that . THe hardest part was the conversion dropping the tranny isnt a big deal. Im going to talk to my boy and see if we can use his mech shop so we can get under the car much easier then i will take a bazillion pictures since ya all know i love pics.

And i guess we will take it from there

If you can vouch that they can bring this POS out of the gutter and to becoming a reliable smooth tranny then yo ill jump on it like a frog. But i rather get a tranny lets say thats not as shitted on as this one so then the rebuild will be worth more if thats possible.

Yo rob, if your boys can do it and rebuild it put new **** make it like new then yo we got ourselves a deal. IM so ******* desperate i want the car ready for ROTORFEST!

So i get paid June3oth. My check will go to that. So give me the number and let me call them up to pipck up the car i dont want to **** it up any more iight

EDIT: How long will it take for them to rebuild it?

they can be rebuilt cheaper just to get the car going again, but for $500 that covers all the wear items and syncros, not just the ones that are a problem now.

Why skimp for a hundred bucks or so after the thing is already out you know?

I already told you a day or two, picking up the car and them pulling and installing the tranny is going to cost you more money you know?

Its a professional shop with 2 locations who are very respected in the industry.

Not much to thier website:

I deal with the owner, not the managers by the way

no shop in the world can pull a tranny, rebuild it, and install it for $500

unless they change one syncro or something crazy like that and call it a rebuild. I can get you a price to do the whole thing but im sure you can find someone to help you pull it

let me again point out that your not dealing with a one man shop or a guy in his garage at home, maybe take your chances and get another used one and hope that the worse is it will have a bad 3rd gear syncro

thats because it didnt go through me

people think perhaps im making money off these things by saying it has to go through me, now you seen first hand

who did you talk to on the phone because I only deal with the owner who could be at either shop depending on the time of day.

Rob x-7 06-28-2005 06:10 AM

dont take this the wrong way, but the way to conduct business is to call from a landline or at least in a quiet place, how exactly did this conversation go?

nothing more aggrevating then not being able to hear someone

it makes them not want to do business with you in situations like that.

They are both on long island, one is in garden city and one is in Massepequa.

just get another used one and see what happens, unless you find one local you wont be ready for rotorfest which is not even 2 weeks away.
