Hey everyone. So I've been driving my 7 more + she needs a rebuild. 1991 NA w almost 190k on her with no rebuilds. For a long time I just wanted to have her sent to someone to get a rebuild + also do some porting (probably street port) I got quoted 4-5k from two different people for this. So I was thinking about doing a Tii swap. I probably would only do sinple bolt on's if I did this as well. I can find an engine + tranny for $1100 shipped. That's alot cheaper than the 4-5k for a rebuild + porting. I know there's more to the Tii swap as well like sensors + a rear end. I would love to do a rebuild myself, but I don't have all the tools that I'de need. I could probably pull an engine + put a new one in though.

I don't want something crazy fast, I have a bike for that. Mostly something to have fun in, occasional autox + some drifting when I feel like it.

So, what do you think?

unfortunately JDM engines are hit & miss in regards to quality and most rx7 shops/engine builders would recommend you get the JSPEC engine rebuilt before installing also...you may consider having the engine delivered at somewhere like BDC so it can be ported and rebuilt PROPERLY. dont go with the cheapest guy you find to rebuild because they are cheap for a reason...

yeah the t2 motor for $1100 is used. its a bit of an apples and oranges comparison.

if you're gonna do the t2 route, you'd be money ahead at least pulling the jdm engine apart, and resealing that before you go stick it in the car

Having done the NA to T2 swap, my opinion would be to simply port the engine and leave it NA. If you pull the engine yourself and install the new one yourself, that would save you a load on costs.

You can get a new rebuilt engine w/ some streetporting from Atkins - they'll ship it to you, you can do the swap yourself and when your done, ship back your old core for a core refund (it differs depending on your year/make/model but mine was $550 refunded years ago). I do the rebuilds myself now, so you may want to call up Atkins and verify the costs on engines/core refunds etc. I know you can do all that for less than $3500 and that's with a warrantied engine.

The NA thing is fun - mild streetport, good exhaust and good tires and you'll be set.

T2 Swap is fun, but IMHO its better to just buy a T2...

Hmm... that's a good idea. I wonder if I could get a turbo engine from atkins + send them back an NA? But then I'de need the tranny + back end.... hmmm.

I'm close enough to them that I could drive there in an hour or so. I live by seattle.

The core engine has to be what you buy - or else they wouldnt have parts to rebuild

But if you live close enough to them, it should be easy to talk w/ them and see what they say...
