I've been tryin to set the timing on my new rebuild, but i couldnt seem to get the idle low enough or stable enough to set it correctly. So i put the BACV back on thinking it would help. But the idle still sucked. And it backfires and floods like crazy on startup.

I made the TPS check light, and tested it. I can turn the set screw so that only one light comes on (like its supposed to) but its very sensitive, and even a tap on the throttle cable can screw up the adjustment and make the second light come on. Then i test the tps with a multimeter, but i'm not getting any continuity from prong A to B, and something like 850 k'ohms on E to D. I assume that the sensor is completely shot...

...I just find it wierd that this one could be bad, because the car used to idle fine before the rebuild. Have they been known to go bad or short out that easily, even if theyre just sitting on a shelf?

step one to setting the TPS is that the car needs to be HOT. then you should be able to set it so the one light is on, and when you open and close the throttle it'll come back to the same place. as the sensor gets older they do get more picky. also if you set the TPS cold, it'll be way off

The car was hot when i tested it. I let it run for around 15 or 20 minutes before i did this to ensure that i did the adjustment right. So if it is this sensitive when adjusting, chances are i need another one?

That makes sense, i'll double check the throttle body when a get home to make sure its closing right. So I'm really just looking for the throttle plates to return to the same spot every time, so that i can make the right adjustment, correct?

But if i'm getting those bad resistance readings, isn't it safe to say that the sensor is bad anyway?
