Unhappy

Ok guys... My buddy has (like I said) a 7 that with a blown motor... (or so he says) his is an 87 with power steering and a turboed 13b that has a stage 2 greddy turbo. (He had it put on by someone who knew what he was doing I don't know who) What should I look for to make sure the motor is REALLY blown. Or could it be just overboost or something? Any help on this one will help me so much as he is just going to sell it to me for $400. (and I am going to scrape up the money to rebuild it if I have to)

Oh by the way... previous owner (amazingly not current) had put a na header and cat back exaust on it from monez(?) and I think a chip in the ecu that she had mentioned. She took decent care of her car. Current owner took care of the car but had problems with emissions. (CA emissions are a royal pain in the ***.) So car guru's help me. (Please for the love of all that is holy) What should I do? Should I go and have it rebuilt? Should I be looking for some other problem? Or should I drop the turbo? Help me out here I need direction.

ecu chips are crap.

here na header and exhaust was probably by Bonez, which IIRC is a cheapy but decent quality.

easiest way to know if its blown, compression test.

why does he thinks its blown what are the symptoms.

You kind of lost me when you said turbo 87, then you mentioned someone put headers on it a few years ago? Is this car turbocharged or naturally aspirated? Or was it N/A and it's had a greddy turbo put on it, and they popped the thing with a bad chip on a high compression block?

You don't chip cars that are 20 years old, the technology is way too old. Now people are rom hacking OBDII computer systems to tune for mods. FC RX7s are before even OBD1 was around. That's why typically people just get a whole new EFI system if they do mods, or at least hack it with an SAFC.

Whatever the hell it is, do a compression test like Kevin says first off to figure out what the situation is.

Survey sez... coolant in the engine. (yup the seals are blown) and its a NA car with a greddy turbo on it. Think I should go ahead and swap it out for a t2 now while I have the chance? And moreover where can I find one? And also where is the writeup for the t2 swap?

in all honesty the car sounds like a cluster ****, just buy a decent t2 and start from there. cars are dirt cheap right now.
