Im taking my yellow car in for an emmissions test here in Arizona. I have not taken an emissions test in a looong time. I am a little nervious, but Im pretty confident it will pass. The car is running really well right now, and even without the airpump hooked up, just the cat alone make a big difference. Its not stinky anymore!

So basically, I will tell you guys exactly what im doing, and whether or not it passes. The engine is mildly ported, with an E6K. I have the racing beat full 3" exhaust, with a 3" cat welded in place of the mid-silencer. There is no room for the factory smog pump, nor do I even own it anymore. In its place, i have a Chevy Suburban electric air pump bolted in the factory location. I am using the factory ACV, but its bolted on top of the blockoff plate. I have modified the ACV so the air from the pump gets sent straight to the cat. I also installed new factory plugs (stock heat ranges.) A fresh tank of gas with 2 ounces of RXP gas kicker.

Visually, it does NOT look stock, but it has all the emissions bits that it should. Im going to drive it around a bit this weekend and take it in for a smog early next week. Keep your fingers crossed and Ill keep you guys posted on the results

Yah, i was going to run 25% denatured alcohol, but Brian Cain suggested I try RXP. I hadnt heard of it, but I did some reading up on it and decided to try it.

Heck, if it fails, Ill just dump the alcohol in and bring it back. But im really curious to see how clean I can get it just using a cat, an airpump and the rxp.

TEST RESULTS= PASS!!!

49/220 @ IDLE

79/220 @ 25MPH (loaded)

0.0% Carbon Monoxide

Full tank of 89 Octane, NO alcohol. Not bad for a cheap Summit Racing cat! Thats pretty clean!

Hmmm... This is interesting. I was just thinking about how I was going to pass emissions when I get my FC running again. Last time my car "passed" although not to legally. I too have a Racing Beat exhaust, but no cat and no airpump(this was the way it came when I purchased it.) I was thinking about getting a high flow cat and replacing the silencer.

Is the air pump really necessary?

Anybody know how Arizona's emissions testing compares to New Jersey's? Easier? Tougher?

Arizona's testing is fairly stringent. Its done by the state, and the car has to be inspected and run on a dyno. Luckily, the inspectors are mostly idiots and have no idea what they are looking at. So if you have an airpump, ACV and a converter you are good to go.

In your case, there is no way the car will pass without an airpump. The converter needs the air to "catalyze" the exhaust gasses. I drove around for awhile without the airpump on to see if I could get it to pass, and I didnt even bother. It definetely smelled better than with no cat at all but was still an eye-burner. But as soon as i switched on the airpump, i could literally put my face right behind the tailpipe. No joke. It makes a huge difference.

I wouldnt even bother with a high flow cat, just buy a 3" cat and the racing beat flanges and have one made up like I did. If you want to permanently run a cat in your car, you might want to try some of these new converters out now that are full metallic. They do not have any ceramic guts and should hold up better to the rotary heat. However, I do not know anyone that has run one of those for any extended period of time to know how they hold up.

Congrats, cym!

As a former resident, I know Jersey has been sniffing tailpipes longer than just about anyone, and I suspect that their standards are fairly stringent.

Hell, the state government in Jersey figures the average citizen isn't competent to pump their own ******* gas. When government gets their nose that far up your ***, it's time to move!
