biggest bang for buck mods will be racing beat header, presilencer and new catback. you can also get rid of ac,air pump, etc for weight reduction. max with boltons is gonna be like 6-6.5 0-60 prolly high 14 in the 1/4. to get that will take a while and alot more than just boltons. if you want a fast light to light racer get a T2. since its turbo it responds alot better to mods

it SHOULD hold a 50-75 shot nicely...i was tempted to try it, but never did, i dont wanna blow my engine..ive heard to many horror stories.

i have an 88 GXL also. i have RB headers, 2.5'' piping all the way back, Electric fan to replace the fanclutch, and intake...it runs pretty hard and with juice im sure i can rip a shitload of cars, but im not gonna juice cause i need the engine to last me...

You could also remove things on the engine that cause parasitic drain. Ie the air conditioning and pwoer steering. You may want to keep the power steering though. Its up to you. Any weight reduction is good as well. Also if you are going to be auto-x you may want to look into new springs and shocks.
