I wasn't saying all J-spec motors come that way. I was merely talking about the motor in my garage. I have seen the housings, apex seals, the rotors, and so forth. I believe I got very lucky in the condition of my motor in comparision to some others. It's definitely a gamble.

Well then, let's change the subject of this thread to a list of Good, Reputable engine suppliers *anywhere*, since engines seem to be what we're asking about.
How about no. Its a lot easier to find information on engine builders, but I havent seen much information on j-spec vendors except the occasional thread in the vendor feedback sections. It is good to remind everyone that j-specs are junkyard motors. Its a used engine, and its probably lived a hard life. But that isnt the point of this thread, merely a footnote. The purpose of this thread is a source for those who already decided a j-spec fits their needs, and need to find a good vendor to get them from. |

if you dont make a claim on a j-spec engines once you get it, your out of luck, probably why Pettit inspects thier engines once they get them, and like I will do on any future engines.
FYI - Not that its very important. Pettit does not inspect the 20B's they get from Japan. They tear them down and rebuild them. Next time I am there I will ask, pecentage wise, what they felt was a good engine vs. a "done" engine. They will not go through thte trouble of a 20B conversion with a used engine. The 20B's are purely considered cores. |
if I was a shop selling 20b conversions I would not install used ones either, that goes without saying!
no matter how much you warn people, if something happens its your shop's name on the swap |
theres a big difference between a jspec 20b and a 13bt or 13brew
all 20bs were automatic high priced luxury cars, where only the fairly wealthy could afford them the 13bt and rew were from a midpriced sportscar the 20b should always have less wear, theyre also fairly mild in power from the factory |

I have personally been involved with 20B and 13BRE's and every one I got ahold of had at least one bad rotor. You are $$$$ ahead to at least pop open every Jspec and renew the software and seals. We all know Rotarys do not like to sit |
Just pick up the phone book, most large cities have engine importers are probably a lot cheaper than buying over the internet. Ofcourse you may be taking more a chance, but most places offer you 30 day guarentees.

We all know Rotarys do not like to sit seal/rebuild kits are about $1000 now, hadly that cheap I think most jspec buyers are NA-TII swappers, I guess the theory is lets get the thing swapped and running, if a coolant seal goes then rebuild it. |
