Its Tranny Rebuild Time!
#1
alright, I now know that my tranny is now officialy gonna die soon, synchros are fucked, throwout bearing, and maybe the clutch....im looking at rebuilding it myself this summer over a week-end. there's a local junk yard with a 90k km tranny which they believe is broken, so i could get it for around $50-$100....im thinking about rebuilding it instead of rebuilding mine.....or might just take parts from both.....kinda of an insurance....
what do i need? new gears, synchros...??
i heard something about miata gears.....which year?? any parts numbers???
i have manuals by the ton and the space to do it....
how long am i looking at?
any tips?

my advice would be to let a pro do it, its not that easy hence the
reason everyday mechanics dont rebuild trannies, tranny rebuilders do.
A shop would charge you about $500-$600 with parts, and more
imortantly- WARRANTY it for 1-2 years.
Even if you do the installation they will warranty
it once they eyeball it to confirm everything was installed correctly.

It's actually not terribly hard to do IF you have the tools and a table that's at least somewhat level and that you don't mind destroying. (Hypoid oil will eat most surfaces).
At minimum you'll need synchros, new cones and any crush plates that the tranny has (I don't know if they do I've neve rebuilt an RX-7 tranny.....yet). Odds are you'll need a new 1st gear and probably reverse as well as they usually get the snot beat out of them.
I doubt you'll need saftey wire. You may feel blessed.
Anyways otherwise you'll need a GOOD set of snap ring pliers, probably a few spanners of differing sizes and a nice morgan knocker (slap hammer, puller whatever you want to call it)
