I tried to get my car started today by dragging it behind my dad's truck and dropping the clutch. The engine was turning over but as soon as i pushed the clutch in the engine stops turning over. It does not accelerate when i pushed the gas pedal down either. The check battery light never came on, but it used to. Before i unscrewed the oil cap and it smelled like old gas. Any advice would be nice.

wait a sec..... how are you trying to pull start it. sounds like you are doing something wrong. if the engine is REALLY flooded. you may have to go up to 30MPH to get it started again. i have done this to a few cars. basically you put it in 1st gear with clutch engaged.... as soon as you get to 30mph pop the clutch. make sure the ignition is turned to the on position. you will hear the engine sputter for a second or two. just floor rev it a bit after it starts and it should clear up............... if you have anymore questions ask

be sure you disengage the clutch when you decide to floor it, or you might rear end the truck that is pulling you.

yeah, it makes me cringe whenever I read posts like these... definitely not safe.

hey vosko, have you ever push/pulled started a car and it would not start after dropping the clutch at 15-20 mph?? my dad said if it didn't start when i dropped the clutch going 15-20 mph then it wouldn't start if i dropped the clutch going 30+ mph.

No disrespect for your Dad; but how much rotary experience does he have? The purpose of a 30MPH push is to rotate the engine fast enough to force the Apex seals out against the housings to create COMPRESSION. 15 mph is not fast enough. But then again none of us know ****

i'm not sure i'm up to date on whats going on with this engine, but to me it seems like something is not right...



I would do a compression check and see if this method of starting even makes any sense first, if it has compression it should start if everything else is in check...



which leads me to whats probably not right, ignition timing, did you confirm the CAS is oriented properly and the drive gear lined up right? have you checked the timing at all?



is there fuel? is it flooded?





if it's flooded and thats why theres no compression due to the fuel washing all the oil away, you can put some MMO in the chambers and restore compression... this pull starting is not safe at all and probably not the solution.



this reminds me of watching someone struggle with a engine harness connector for 30 minutes attempting to force it apart when all they had to do was pry away the clips on BOTH sides before trying to gently pull the connectors apart... not realizing there was another clip on the opposite side before resorting to the brute force approach. Take an intelligent, logical approach to diagnosing your problem and fixing it, you'll probably be more satisfied in the long run... with both yourself and the car.

You always bring the levelheaded aspect to the party, I admire that.. but dont you ever take to the garage with a breaker bar and a pipe wrench?
