OK....this is weird as ****. I was trying to install a CD player into my car. I just bought a new Kenwood Deck, and some connectors that allow it to connect to the factory harness without having to splice into the wires. I clip them in, hook up the antenna and then go to ground the black ground wire. It makes a pop sound....and the CD player won't work. I mess with it some more and it tells me some odd Malfunction message....I get tired of messing with it, and unhook all the wiring and just have no stereo. Then I go to start the car which was running fine...and nothing. When I turn the key to the on position, I hear all these noises in the engine bay so I have someone else come turn it to the on position so I can be in front of the car and hear the sounds again. Every sensor, buzzer, solenoid, connector, etc...all sound like they are clicking, popping, buzzing, crackling, etc....all of them. I try and check the MIL and I hook up a connector between the diagnosis port and the negative and nothing...no blinks, flashes, etc..nothing. I unhook the wire from the battery and the CEL light comes on and stays on. I hook the wire back up to the battery and it goes back off like it is supposed to. I unhook it again...same thing.

So I am beginning to think my stereo connectors are wired wrong from where I bought them and that it sent a 12v signal to the ECU and fried it. I can't think of anything else that could cause all this **** to happen all at once. I tried to jump the car and still nothing....it turns over faster and all...but still nothing. I checked all my fuses to see if maybe I just blew a fuse, nope...all of them are fine.

Could it have something to do with the Security system on these cars? I am new to FC's and all...I just sold my FD and bought this 1990 TII, everything was working fine, but it had no stereo....so that is why I bought all this **** and was doing what I was. Now, I don't care about the stereo...I just want my car back the way it was.

What do you guys think? I am open to anything...I just want it to run again.

My mind says it is either:

1. ECU

2. Security **** killing my car

3. EGI Fuse....I checked it, but maybe, who knows?

But how would a fuse or a security system make all that noise in the engine bay? I am leaning towards the ECU mostly since it would explain alot of that engine **** if it was messed up and was surged. Is there any way to check it? To see if it is good or not?

Thanks,

Scott

i'm sorry man... that sucks. it sounds like an ecu problem, but dont listen to me on that. i don't know much about the wiring on these cars. best of luck.

but hey, if it is the ecu, you could always use it as an excuse to buy a halteck.

Could be ECU related.

Do you have access to another ECU (scrapyard or something)? Just one to try out possibly?

hmm i dont think you sent a 12v signal to the computer, you wouldve definitely fried something else before that would happen.

the radio runs through multiple fuses. such as the 7.5 room fuse, the radio fuse itself, and some other fuse (ive burnt all of them, sunuvabitch things). i';d check the room fuse (7.5 fuse on drivers foot area) and since you went to a bigger/better radio id up it to like a 10amp...mines a 15amper right now.

that wouldnt kill the ability of the engine to start tho, im really sorta lost one this one, sorry.

kevin.

Start with checking ALL of your fuses and wiring. Purchase the Hayes manual of find a copy of the wiring diagram for the car and start testing voltages, continuity, etc.

I have a hard time believing you fried your ECU by putting a stereo in with a connector kit. Weirder things have happened I guess....

BTW - I have an aftermarket stereo in my car with a functioning stock security system, works fine.

I'm a little confused with your terminology, sorry, what does MIL and CEL stand for??

What wire did you disconnect from the battery?

MIL/CEL - Check Egine Light (same thing, some people call it an MIL as well)

I used a wire between the diagnosis connector and the negative terminal on the battery. So I could see if my ECU was sending any codes. With the wire connected, my CEL goes out, but as soon as I take the wire off of the battery, it comes back on and stays on. And I can do this over and over....it's like a lightswitch.

I checked all the fuses and everything seems fine. Neither of the radio fuses were blown (the one under the dash or the one on the stereo), the EGI fuse looked ok to me as well. I don't have access to another S5 ECU nearby to check with. I am completely lost...it just was like.....*BOOM* I am not going to run no more. Now, I have no car.

I am trying to switch over to a stand alone as well....but I am not 100% sure that it will fix my problem. I hope it does. I will replace the ECU, wiring harness, and damn every fuse in the car if I have to. I just need my car running again....all this over a stereo. This sucks!
