Well my volts on my car was reading low, near 12v at idle and my car had a hard time staring and finally the battery died. So i bench tested it and it was discharged, recharged it and still the same problems. So i tested my alternator while it was on my car, and the bench tester said the same thing 12v. So i had it rebuilt, by a respected place that rebuilds all the cities gov't alt's, and they rebuild the whole thing, not just whats broken. And its all gold and shiny alluminum coating. Well im still seeing the 12v reading. I replaced my belts and tightened them. Whats up with my car? i have no accessories, just a 140watt Cd player and some nice 4-way 6x9s. I also have an e-fan. But with everthing off, and unplugged i still get 12v at idle. When i drive the car i get 14v. wtf? is my alt still shot? im going to bring it into them soon. any ideas? I also just put on a ground that was off near my exhauast, just bolted it up to the exhaust, but i already tried that. One more thing, this little ground thing, its near the spark plugs and comes off the wiring harness, its bolts to a tranny bolt and has a black case on it. It broke so i opend it and resolder it and connected it to my engine. What is it for? i noticed some kind off resistor thing in the little black case. It is a wire that unplugs from the wiring harness, very short maybe a foot.

I've had the same problem for long time and at the end the battery didn't charge anymore, just like yours. The diode bridge was burned and so the regulator. The diodes probably caused the regulator to break. Maybe they didn't change everything in your alternator but they usually run a test with full charge so it could be a failure of a part they replaced.

I'm not sure if it's the black case that you're talking about, but this is usually a filter for the electronic and audio devices like radio, etc...

A bad cell in the battery could put a load on the system and cause that type of problem.... <_<

I agree. A bad battery could show fully charged but still not be putting out. How old is the battery?

Does it spark when you pull the ground wire off the battery? If its more than a little then you have a short somewhere.

yeah, it could be the battery. You should try to charge it a few hours with a battery charger, disconnect it and read the voltage with a voltmeter after 15 minutes then let it unconnected all the night and read the voltage again. It should keep about the same voltage.
