well on my way home from work last night i went to shift into fifth and foud myself almost leaned over my center console. I stoped checked it out and sure enough i can shift into a space that is much farther out than fifth gear is. and when im in first or second the shifter wants to head twards me but its still in gear. It did get stuck in second once i had to lift the shifter up then pull it over to were second is and i was able to get it out but im lost for what is causing it. I took off the shift boot area and there is a small round metal washer(for lack of better word) sort of chillin on top of the shift ball and i can almost lift the shifter completely out of the tranny. needless to say i just threw everything back together and am now driving my gxl but i would like to know if anyone knows what the hell i did?

i dont run the car like a maniac, though i can say that the previous owner didnt. but i hope that its nothing that totaly screws me right now

obviously

I would take off the shifter, just to have a look at it, and see if there is any visible damage, and then go from there
