Christ...I've been trying to find out what my insurance would be like if I got an '88 RX-7 Turbo II in July. This is outrageous

My stats:

18 years old

2 years driving

No tickets

No accidents

Both Geico, Nationwide (what we have), and AllState quoted me ranging from $1600-$2000 every 6 months. Gave me about the same range for if I was the primary driver on my parents insurance. Even a non-turbo'd version wasn't that much cheaper. $4000 a year...that's about the price of the goddamn car! If I get the car, I won't be driving it every day, because I really don't want to have a car in the city unless I have a job that's too far to bike to (I'd keep it at my house in Manassas). Currently, insurance for my Accord is roughly $400 every 6 months. God, I guess insurance agencies hate the words "Male," "Coupe," and "Turbo"...

mazdaspeed7 03-24-2004 06:53 PM

You suck. Im paying $460 every 6 months for liability on my 90 GTU.

FC3SJunkie 03-24-2004 07:07 PM

I don't see why this is MY fault...i've got a clean record...Oh, and the insurance rate on an NA wasn't that much different

Lol, dont take that first part seriously. I dont really know why its so high. Is it full coverage? Considering the price of the car, and how much youll pay in premiums for full coverage, laibility only is the way to go. If nothing else, put the money that would have gone towards full coverage into the bank, and save it up for when something goes wrong.

Have you shopped around?

FC3SJunkie 03-24-2004 07:26 PM

Could you explain the difference between full coverage and liability (I don't know **** about insurance). As far as shopping around, the only people I looked at were Geico, Nationwide, and All-State. I've been told by others to look around for smaller insurance companies, b/c they'll probably have a better rate.

NCTII87 03-24-2004 07:50 PM

liability covers only damage you do to others property. full coverage takes care of damage you do to yours or that something else does to your car. its sometimes not even worth payin for it cause most likely, if your car gets a lil dent in it, its prolly gonna be totalled with age in consideration.

Rob x-7 03-24-2004 07:54 PM

liablilty would be the same, just dont get full coverage thats

all, as long as someone else hits your car it will be fixed

anyhow.

you DO NOT need full coverage when someone else hits your car

1Revvin7 03-24-2004 07:55 PM

$90 a month for liablity for a so called 146 hp n/a https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 07:58 PM

Your first mistake is you admit you don't know **** about insurance. You need to get an estimate when you know what you are talking about. Those rates are ridiculous with a clean record (but it IS a TII).

Full coverage is they will pay to fix your car if you crash it after paying a deductable. It's covered for fire, theft, and accident even if it's your own fault, they will fix it or reimburse you. Liability is what you need to roll down the road. Just basic insurance to drive the car.

I pay $4K annually for my GXL, But I have a few blotches on my driving record, and according to the Canadian insurance company, I get a big fat rate hike for being a single male, 19 or 20 years of age (legal drinking age up here).

And I think my rates are absolutely retarded.

When you get another quote, make sure you shop around, and tell them you want basic insurance to roll down the road with, no special coverages.

Rob x-7 03-24-2004 07:58 PM

by the way, I pay something like $620 a year with my other cars

thats what its listed on the policy as,

but the funny thing is, if I drop the car from my insurance

it only goes down like $120, I get the multiple car discounts.

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 08:00 PM

I inqured about multiple car discount.. I save $150 per month if I insure both my cars at the same time! Bringing my monthly payment down to the low low price of $475!

Fluid Dynamics 03-24-2004 08:00 PM

$320 / 6 months for liability and PIP through Allstate is what I have to pay. I got a huge break after I turned 25.

Rob x-7 03-24-2004 08:00 PM

I also have a $1,000,000 liability policy

mazdaspeed7 03-24-2004 08:01 PM

Unmarried 16-24 yr old males take it hard on car insurance in the US.

And for the love of god, do some research. And if you think car insurance is bad, try health insurance if its not through your employer.

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 08:01 PM

My company wouldn't allow less than a million liability due to "the way things are now adays". https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

Translation: Grab your ankles. We'll take care of the rest.

93 R1 03-24-2004 08:03 PM

21 years old

Good record

No tickets

93 Rx7 and 01 Tahoe on my own policy is $1550 total per year for full coverage on both.

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 08:04 PM

Yeah I know.. I'm fucked anyways because I've been with the same company for a while. I have discount with them because I've been with them for 3 years, so if I go else where my rates are at BEST an extra couple hundred per year.

I would seriously own an Fd if I could get a rate like that.

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 08:07 PM

If you get any tickets while you are your age, get ready to pay ridiculous rates until you are 25.

I can't stress enough - don't get ANY tickets. ANY ticket is going to impact, no matter how small.

roadkill669 03-24-2004 08:10 PM

$125 a month on my 87 T2. Many tickets.......

Bills paying $77 a month for full coverage for his so called NA also.....even with his....uh yeah......record....

Full coverage on 2003 Protogay is $117 month

in NY you pay for any violation for 3 years and 4 months

its off your license in 18 months, but insurance fucks you for 40 months

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 08:15 PM

Yeah same up here. It's on your driver abstract for 3 years.. Insurance fucks you for.. Well we will find out, but it's longer than 3 years so far. I've heard anywhere from 5-7 years your rates are high.

Rob x-7 03-24-2004 08:16 PM

and please- ive been waiting for my insurance to go down

when you turn 21, 25, 30- I never see a difference, they are full

of ****

FC3SJunkie 03-24-2004 08:25 PM

Well, my dad is refusing to switch insurance companies. So, i'm stuck with the ass-raping of Nationwide. Looks like i'm just gonna have to look for a different car all together...Bye bye Turbo II https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

rowtareh 03-24-2004 08:32 PM

Paying 1400 for 6 months coverage. Being 19, I have only been driving for about 6 months now(don't give me any **** about it either).

And yes, I agree. Think car insurance is a bitch. Deal with dental and medical insurance. THAT IS ALOT OF PAPERWORK!!

Just this advice, shop around homie. Just shop around. I am going with Geico because it is easy. Oh yeah, and don't lie about what you have either. They can find out easily, and you would be fucked.

rowtareh 03-24-2004 08:35 PM

You think it is gonna be any different with any other car??? With an 84 Ford for me, would have been the exact same price. Maybe about 40 bucks less. Which would equal to like a 5 dollars less per month.

Just shop around!!!!!!!!!

FC3SJunkie 03-24-2004 08:47 PM

I can't shop around...I can't change insurance companies.

FCmaniac 03-24-2004 09:00 PM

$110 a month for 3 cars, full coverage on the nissan and the fc $500 collision deductible, $250 comp, liability only on the fb, 27 years old, 11 years driving, one ticket no accidents in last 3 years (thats as far back as they looked for my rate).

I shopped around and this policy is with AIG which for me was the cheapest by at least $50 a month.

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 11:29 PM

Why the hell not?

FC3SJunkie 03-24-2004 11:37 PM

My dad refuses to switch auto insurance companies. Besides, I think having my own policy would be a lot more money

ColinRX7 03-24-2004 11:41 PM

You think...

Look into it before you throw in the towel.

CGeek2k 03-25-2004 12:10 AM

My car is insured under my dads name for $80 a month. If it were in my name I'd be paying almost $400 a month for liability only. Course im an 18 year old male with 2 accidents and a history of seizures. Pretty much just bend over and take it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

FC3SJunkie 03-25-2004 12:12 AM

I might talk to my dad about insuring it under his name (if possible). I typed in his information into Nationwide's Quick-Quote and it was only $600 a year for full coverage...

CGeek2k 03-25-2004 12:15 AM

All you have to do is get both of your names on the title as a joint owner.

FC3SJunkie 03-25-2004 12:34 AM

Would it still be $600 per year? Or $2000 since i'd be driving it?

CGeek2k 03-25-2004 12:48 AM

The insurance company would see it as your dads car for $600. If anything happens the cops see it as you borrowing the car from him. Though it might put a mark on his record if you screw up, Im not sure though, so no point in telling him that. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

As long as both names are on the title and the registration, you can drive it all you want and it can be insured in just his name. Dont put your name anywhere on the insurance. I know this is legal in Colorado, at least untill Im declared fully independent when I turn 24 or get married.

FC3SJunkie 03-25-2004 10:24 AM

Well, I found out that my Honda is currently insured to my dad (which explains why it's about $500 a year). I ran the idea by him (sort of), but i'd have to actually sit down to talk with him about it. His co-worker is willing to sell his 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue to us for $5000 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683698.gif I'd rather keep my Honda.

FC3SJunkie 03-25-2004 01:14 PM

**** it, i'm just not gonna get a new car. Everything that's decent is too much on insurance. On top of that comes car payments, my rent, food, and books. I shouldn't be this depressed about it, but I am https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png
