A lot of members on here, such as myself, have been here for a very long time and owned an rx7 before this forum existed...so I'm curious what everybody paid for their FC when you FIRST bought it, and how much have you put in it?

My '88 SE was $3500 w/ 95K on it when I purchased it.

In NA form, I put roughly $2500 into it(1K being wheels/tires).

Since the turbo conversion I've spent about 8K...and another 3400 on the new motor...so I've spent about $17,500 on the car, not including maintenance,etc...

1Revvin7 03-07-2003 06:58 PM

3.8k when i bought it n/a, the car was mint, that was a little over 2 years ago. When it was n/a i spent about 1k on maintence, and 2k on paint, 1.5k on bolt-ons. Since the turbo conversion I have spent about 6k on it. I still need a hood, bumper, rb catback, misc engine stuff, wheels/tires/coilovers/FMIC/seats/rollbar. Then I am done, new project:house. I have sold about 1.5k in old parts so I'm somewhere near 12-13K. Damn glad i spent every penny on it too, only thing i would have done it skipped all the n/a mods and gone straight to turbo or flew out of state to buy a turbo2, but I have learned a hell of a lot and its been the best experience of my life. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

pengaru 03-07-2003 06:59 PM

i bought my 87 gxl with 72k miles on it for $2600 around 1.5 years ago... it has 100k miles on the chassis now and a new street ported motor, I don't want to think about how much I've spent. It's probably around 10k put into it not including initial purchase.

Rotaryman88 03-07-2003 07:07 PM

This post might get people crying when they think back on how much they've spent, lol!

No one would ever believe what I paid for my vert over 7 years ago.

Lets just say buying a car off someone who was going into rehab was

a good thing.

Dont know if I will ever tell, lol

I did get the "other" vert for nothing but it had not run in over 3 years.

pengaru 03-07-2003 07:18 PM

yeah I've heard quite a few stories about amazing purchases of 7's, it seems common for someone to buy one that doesnt run for nothing, and discover it just has stuck apex seals, after soaking in MMO/ATF for a day or two it starts right up, instant profit.

Rob x-7 03-07-2003 07:22 PM

I bought that GXL I sold over the summer for $500, guy though the engine

was ****, un-flooded it, plugged the AFM in, adjusted the TPS and it purred like a kitten.

Lets say I got as good a deal on my vert when I bought it, better yet because the car ran perfect.

pengaru 03-07-2003 07:26 PM

yup, I should start looking for 'dead' NA FC's in my area, I imagine most of them can be revived with some know-how for little money... T2's on the other hand.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Rob x-7 03-07-2003 07:35 PM

T2s are usually ****, lol.

Its also good my friend has a shop and I have access to his dealer

license plates, or his tow truck.

Rotaryman88 03-07-2003 07:39 PM

Yea...I'm looking to get my GF an rx7 and there is an '87 SE for sale near my college for $700...the add says it has a timing problem and that a mechanic that supposedly knew about rotaries said it was an easy fix...I'm thinking...how can timing be making the car run so badly..I might go check it out...see if I can't get it for like $500 and hope its only bad plugs or something,lol...

vosko 03-07-2003 07:40 PM

88 SE 230k miles blown rear rotor $400

89 GTU was $3k with 66k miles on and 4k on mazda reman and new stock clutch

87 TII was $1500 with 110k and blown coolant seal

93 base 87k miles, mods, $11.5k

89 TII 110k miles, bone stock $500 not running needed tons of work to get driveable, new wheel bearing, all new rotors, new pads, new tires, basically new everything.... lol

rxpower 03-07-2003 07:40 PM

bout mine for $500 and have put mabe $500 more into it. But I'm just getting started. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

turborotor 03-07-2003 07:43 PM

Bought my FC in 1992 for 11k after financing. IT had 68k miles.

I have spendt over 20k on my car.

Geoffman72 03-07-2003 07:49 PM

Bought mine in April of 2000 for $4,400 with 63k on it and completely immaculate.

banzaitoyota 03-07-2003 07:51 PM

88 gxl $850.00 Needed 2 used secondary injectors. Put 30K miles on it till it tossed an Apex at 249,9?? Miles. Sold chassis for $500.oo

86 GXL : 700.00

88 TII : Not telling, but nice find!!

gazellis 03-07-2003 08:29 PM

Am I the only one that bought mine new? Got mine in 1987 (RX-7 GXL) new off the dealer's lot and if I remember correctly it was around $19,500.

Engine rebuild last week. First one at 157,000 miles. Only one clutch prior to the new one put in at the rebuild. It has been and is now once again a great car.

Apex13B 03-07-2003 08:31 PM

89 vert...told the guy it had a blown motor (water thermosensor & tps adjustment) $13.00 sensor, 5 min adjusting the tps. i bought it for $2000 with 88,000 miles on it (mahattan car, the shocks still need to be changed)

Seppuku 03-07-2003 09:32 PM

I paid 3xxx.xx cant remember it was close to 4000 for my 88 vert with 110,000 miles on it almost mint condition. Ive now put a little more than 1500 into it not including maitnance. And i got more going into it soon.

rx7machine 03-07-2003 09:47 PM

All these stories make me feel good about owning RX-7's. Well, my '87 n/a was given to me by my mom like 3 years ago. It had about 67K miles on it. She bought it brand new off the dealer's lot.. I'm still pissed at her that she didn't get a TII, but hel..l if it wasn't for the inspiration of her n/a I probably would have had nothing to do with RX-7s today. I've spent approx. $1,650 on the '87. Bought the '93 Base only four months ago with 70K miles on it. Spent approx. $1,865 on her.. And I know the money spending trend is just begining for me.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

sidewinderx7 03-07-2003 10:04 PM

I payed about 6.5k for mine last year. I know i got raped on the deal, but that was the car i wanted... so lay off assholes! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png And also, im the only guy i know with a 91 TII! So again, lay off assholes!

Hell i got screwed with buying my vert too but atleast you got a tII plus a s5 wich is hard to find but the way i look at it as long as your happy thats all that matters.

beatup7 03-07-2003 10:49 PM

i have a beat to hell 88 se, with fucked suspension, it cost me an 87 volvo sedan, which i paid 750 for and put 50k miles on

R45 03-08-2003 01:05 AM

This is a good thread. anyways, got my 88GXL in Nov. of last year payed $1000 for it. Blow apex seal. Interior is perfect. not even stains of the floor mats! I have spent only about $500 for tools and crap. i know the spending has only begun.

Holy ****, whats all done to it?

isamu 03-08-2003 01:24 AM

I picked up my 88 se last May for 400 bones. It had a blown apex seal, fucked up hood and fenders. The carpet was dirty as hell and the drivers seat was split open from top to bottom. I have probably spent around 2500 rebuilding the engine with a streetport, new hood, fenders, seats, exhaust and just a bunch of other small stuff that needed to be fixed. The car is super fun to drive and runs great. The last time I calculated my mileage I got 22 on the highway and 19 in the city which was more than I was expecting!

FCmaniac 03-08-2003 07:40 AM

Good thread... gazellis deserves an award or something for still having his seven as the first owner!

I bought an 86 base with 73K from the Mazda dealer in 1995 for $3700. That car was what first got me interested in mechanics, mods, imports, racing, everything... I then went through 5 Hondas and spent a shitload of money (what a shame now that i think about it).... went back to RX7s in 2000 when I bought my 88 SE with 63K for $3200, put about $3K into it so far and recently picked up an 86 with 166K for $850.

The thing I regret most is I test drove a 10th AE in 95 with 80K for $5500 and ended up buying an NA!! I didnt know anything about RX7's... I probably would've ended up ruining it but still. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

My first FC I bought in 96, it was a 90 GTU, bought it for about $7000. Really didn't put any $ into it.

I bought my 88 vert in 2000, for around $6000, I put way too much $ into it, prolly around $2500 - $3000.

Then I discovered the wonders of boost...

I bought my AE about a year ago for $2150, and have easily put over $3000 into it.

when you put money into a turbo car you feel it everytime you push down the go pedal https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

ILUVMY88CABRIO 03-08-2003 10:24 AM

Yup! Now that I've owned a turbo, I feel it is a waste of $ buying **** for a NA, unless you go all out, but even then it won't have the power of a turbo.

Apollorx7 03-08-2003 01:16 PM

My dad bought me the GXL a year and a half ago. He spent 2100 on it and it had a broken a/c when he bought it. I just bought the T2 in December for 1850. The sunroof is rusted out and the passenger side rear brake is messed up. Other than that and a few scratches it is perfect.

Rotaryman88 03-08-2003 01:37 PM

Glad to see everybody is enjoying this thread...I thought it'd be interesting to see. Wish I was the first owner of my SE...it probably wouldn't have blown so early in it's life!

CrashFactory 03-08-2003 01:42 PM

bought my '87 SE for 1900$$ with 100k miles on it and prolly have spent 700-900$ on it so far, most of that was the new clutch/pp/throw our bearing and new tires......
