how much boost is too much?

So, just out of curiosity... I've been doing a whole lot of work to my 88 T2. I was just wondering how much boost will destroy the motor. I have installed bigger turbo, full exhaust, fmic, bov, external wastegate 14psi spring (this is what worries me), 1.8 rtek chip upgrade, 800cc injectors. Now am I just asking for trouble? Will this blow up first thing come spring time? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

There is no such thing as too much boost. There is not enough fuel, not enough timing, and to high intake temps but not to much boost. you can boost as much as your engine can physically take if it is tuned right ie: enough fuel, timing, cooling. the next thing to worry about is the actual engine coming apart breaking tension bolts blowing coolant gaskets, and other physical aspects.



Now for what you posted what turbo you running, i ask because running 14 psi on a stock turbo is not the same as running 14 psi on a to4z or a t66 if you have a medium to large frame turbo at 14 psi with just an rtek chip and 800 cc you might be in trouble. you need a better way to adjust fuel maybe a stage 2 rtek or the best option a standalone. but then either way the car has to be properly tuned

Get a wideband o2 meter and watch your a/f ratios closely.

yeah you have the peices, but it needs to be setup and dialed in right, to be reliable, afr's and egt's are important...

Thanks, I went with the chip upgrade because it is less expensive than standalone. I've also never installed standalone in anything before so it's a little intimidating. I'll work on getting an a/f ratio gauge and egt.

If you can wire a car stereo from scratch you can install a stand alone. It is a matter of double checking your connections each time and following the wiring diagram. I did my first standalone installation with a microtech LT10s and the car fired up first crank no problem no errors. Now im the cheapest standalone installer in SW Florida $500 car is running. Now tunning is another story I dont like tunning.

Don't get an AF gauge, get a wideband oxygen sensor. Innovative motorsports makes several nice units.



One big problem with running a stock turbo at higher boost levels is it just won't last long. I've cooked several running @ 14+psi.

Which innovative kit would work pretty good? Also the turbo is not stock, it's pretty big although it's an ebay special, probably made in china.

I think a lot of guys use the Innovative LC-2 Wideband. It is very reasonably priced, and a pretty good unit.
